Victory Day And Victory Parades.

That pavement must be three feet thick!

Try more like at least 6 feet! And in Red Square the cobblestone is all covering tunnels that redirect the various rivers running through Moscow.

When I was there in the 1990s, each year when spring came, instead of repairing or replacing all the cracked and potholed roads and sidewalks after the long freezes, the city would just have workers lay a new level of asphalt over everything (the sidewalks grew by about four inches of unevenly applied black material each year and the original concrete had vanished in many places).

The geology of the Moscow region is truly amazing considering that some of the Metro lines actually run beneath rivers that are beneath the surface streets. All of that stuff underground and the city stands. You should hear those tanks rolling through the city streets - or should I say "feel" them.
