Medal "Hoji-Ya-Henda".
MPLA youth league (JMPLA) Medal
José Mendes de Carvalho, better known as Hoji-ya-Henda (War name), was a commander from FAPLA killed in combat. He is now a national hero and patron of the Angolan youth. Commander Hoji-ya-Henda (José Mendes de Carvalho), died in combat, at 27 years old, during a raid to the headquarters of the Portuguese colonial army in Karipande, Moxico, on April 14, 1968.[1] The 1st Assembly of the 3rd Political-Military Region of the People's Liberation Movement of Angola (MPLA), held on March 23, 1969, stated that in his memory, April 14 is to be celebrated in Angola as the Angolan Youth Day. He was buried near the river Lundoji 30 miles from the then headquarters of Karipande, from the Front East of the 3rd Political-Military Region.[2] In August 1968, the MPLA assigned to Hoji-ya-Henda the title of "dear Son of the Angolan people and heroic fighter of the MPLA". An assembly which gathered in Cabinda for years, several youth organizations, some of which political party, affiliated to the National Youth Council (CNJ) determined that April 14 would remain the Angolan National Youth Day.
