Re: Marshal's Uniform Ribbon Set
Will,
I hope for you that this is the real version. The other version is that the boards have the same "origin" as the ribbon bar, and were used to upgrade an otherwise very ordinary general set. Marc |

Re: Marshal's Uniform Ribbon Set
Marc...
Thank you, but while I was offered the uniform, I do not intend to acquire it. Assuming that it is an original Marshal's uniform (it includes the trousers with magenta piping) it is still not something that I would be interested in adding to my collection. I simply do not have collecting interests that would encompass a Soviet Marshal of Engineering. |

The second one, I THOUGHT it was the military merit medal II class, but after taking a closer look, the picture shows three white stripes instead of two. My bad. :( And I don´t have a clue of what it might be. The last one is the ribbon for the Romanian Medal of Liberation from the Fascist Yoke. Source: http://www.medals.pl/ro/ro2.htm

Re: Marshal's Uniform Ribbon Set
How is the bar mounted? Is it on a cheap metal mount simply pinned on? Or is it cloth that was professionally mounted by a tailor? While both are faked the former is easier to do. And judging by the ripples on the uniform fabric around the bar it doesn't look custom made/mounted, to me anyway.

Re: Marshal's Uniform Ribbon Set
The ribbon bar is for sure not for an engineer marshal. As Lapa says, no engineering marshal fit into the awards setup of this ribbon bar. As for the lack of long service awards, these were introduced in 1957 for 10, 15 and 20 years of service. Prior to that, long service was rewarded in other ways including the Order of Lenin, Red Banner, Red Star and medal for combat service. Hence the 1957 introduced service medals are usually absent for high ranking staff.
Looking at the ribbon bar itself, this type is quite common on eBay. It is made from split gas tubes glued onto olive or sometimes black felt. It would be very interesting to see further photos of the uniform though. If you chose to buy the set, make sure this ribbon bar is just sewn on and not glued onto the jacket, then you can always remove it and still have a very nice uniform. Also, before buying, check the availability of matching visor caps - if not included. |

Re: Marshal's Uniform Ribbon Set
Well, again, we now know that the ribbons were added, which I thought was probably likely, and which is why I posted the question here for comments in the first place.
However, even assuming that it is an original Marshal of Engineering uniform exclusive of the ribbon set, it is not an item that I would acquire. It is not within my area of interest in collecting. So whether or not someone has an apprpriate service cap with the magenta piping and cap band is not something with which I need to concern myself. Fortunately, the ribbon set seems to have simply been hand sewn to the jacket and could probably be easily removed without much evidence, if any, that it was ever on there. So whoever ultimately ends up with the uniform can restore it in that sense with little difficulty. I suppose that when I created the thread and said that I was offered the uniform I should have been more clear. I was offered the uniform, but I was not interested in acquiring it. However, I was still interested in the question of whether the ribbon set might be legitimate, particularly in light of the absence of irreproachable service medals, or whether it was added to the jacket. |

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
Today I had the opportunity to take the uniuform in hand.
It was a "good news, bad news" situation. The "good news" was that inspecting the uniform close-up confirmed for me that it is an original uniform, showing all of the appropriate characteristics of construction, age, and wear that I have come to expect from looking at Soviet uniforms over the last 15 years. The Marshal of Engineering shoulder boards look nice, with the engineering insignia done in a gold thread, though I don't have enough experience with Marshal's service uniform boards to say much beyond that. The buttons are dated "67". The straight leg trousers are also quite nice, showing a degree of wear that is commensurate with the jacket. The "bad news" came from the fact that the ribbon set was obviously held on to the uniform with some glue while it was being sewn on to the jacket. It seemed to me that an outline of the original ribbon set was visible on the jacket. I do not know how easy it will be for the next owner to remove the glue residue from the jacket once the fake ribbon set is removed. I wil try to take a few better photos of the boards and I'll post them in the uniform section, since this thread was moved from "Uniforms" to the section where I now found it. |

Weight of supensions
Hi guys,
I am not sure if there was a thread before about this topic, but however, I can't find it. I am going to have a look at some orders tomorrow and I need to know the typical weights of suspensions(brass, brass-steel, aluminium). Can you tell me them please? Thank you, Marv |
