There are some great references out there on Berlin. Three books that I can think of right off the top are "The Road to Berlin", "The Fall of Berlin" and "The Battle for Berlin". I am at work, and am just going off my head for these titles, but you should be able to find them on Amazon or whatever booksource you use. I also just got "Berlin, Then and Now" and am quite pleased with the book. None of these books are really cheap (the prices on "Then and Now" start around $75) but they are great references and will keep you reading for a while!

Bryan,
I don't know exactly what you are looking for, but, "Berlin, Then and Now" is a great book !! The one I was pleased to find in 1999... Ch. |

While we're on the topic... If anyone ever finds a book of maps of the Soviet invasion of Berlin, please let me know. Any time I research a Berlin campaign group I have to search through a half dozen books to get a decent picture of where a unit went!

Well actually I wasn't looking for a book, but for a documentary with images (DVD, VHS) about the Battle for Berlin.
What's concerning books, I only have the one written by Antony Beevor "Berlin, the downfall".

You should read at least a couple of other view points on the subject, Beevor being quite anti-soviet too often. I would recommend "The End of the TR", by Chuikov. Easy reading, all the way of the 8th Guards Army from the Dniester to Berlin. Sorry I don't know of a documentary/film to recommend. The only one I remember now is the appropriate episode of an old TV series, "World at War" I believe. I have the Stalingrad episode and a few more but not the one about the Fall of Berlin. Guys, any other you'd recommend? Best, Dolf |

One might also read John Toland's, "The Last Battle", which covers this epic struggle from all major angles; German, Russian AND American. He interviewed virtually ALL the major surviving generals, marshals, commanders and figures for this book, and it was written in his uniquely readable, fascinating and entertaining style. It shows a deeply human aspect also, in the myriad side-plots. HIGHLY recommended!!

I can recommand these DVDs : * Berlin Surrender - 2002 - Published by Delta Music (UK). With an english commentary, this documentary features footage filmed by Soviet camera crews located alongside combat troops. * Luftangriff auf Berlin - 2003 - Published by e-m-s new media AG. In german. Part of a serie about german cities in flames. * Schlacht um Berlin - 200? - Published by Chronos-Media GmbH. In german. Vol 7 of the famous serie on Berlin. * Berlin'45. Der Sturm auf Berlin. Der erste Sommer im Frieden. - 2003 - Published by Spiegel TV. In german, with a lot of sequences in colour. Hope this helps... Ch. |

This week The History Channel ran a 10-hour series called "Hitler's War". It included some of the recently-released footage from the Soviet archives plus much more. One episode was about the fall of Berlin, naturally. It will certainly be available -- maybe it already is -- on DVD or tape. I taped most of it myself and I enjoyed watching it.
