Since Saddam came to power in the end of 70's Iraq went through two major conflicts:
- Iran-Iraq war, - invasion of Kuwait and later Gulf War. These events resulted in introduction of new medals and decorations: - 1983 Wounded medal, - 1991 Mother of All Battles medal. Civilian and party medals are the following: - Wisam Al Amal – from the ruling Baath party, - Nut Al Amal - Workers medal. Other medals include: - police services medal, - medals made specifically just for President Saddam Hussein. Best, William |

i find it ironic that the writer of the article has not checked his sources because he has completly forgotten that it was the us that put saddam there in the 1st place! also it was the sas who trained the elite republican guards!!
but yeah id love to see the pics of that medal!!

Rest assured, I don't think the author has any secret agenda here. As far as I know, he is not an agent of the CIA or MI5 But if anyone has any issue with historical inaccuracies, I think discussion with the author via private means is more appropriate. I've contacted Chuck in Oregon and hope to get his image(s) online. In the meantime, Ed's site has some nice images of Iraqi awards if anyone chooses to view them.

OK. I'll try again to post the scan. I think I have faithfully followed Rusty and Art's directions. It is only a 28KB image so the limit wouldn't seem to come into play. I admit to not being certain of the ID and I can't find a reference to verify it. I bought it as and believe it to be an Iraqi medal presented to Soviet advisers. I would appreciate any and all comments. I just clicked "Preview Reply" and I don't see the image. I must be missing a step that is obvious to everyone else.
Hey, it worked! Here is the reverse. Thanks for the help. I think my problem was in previewing the reply before posting it. That seems to drop the image file. Last edited by CtahhR; 01-22-2014 at 10:56 PM. |

Chuck,
I'm glad I was helpfull. The medal looks like something out of StarTrek... very nice looking design... Thanks for sharing, Rusty.

That thing in the middle? I puzzled over that for a long time without coming up with a good answer. My best guess is that it is the ancient Mesopotamian empire. I admit that I may be embarrassingly wrong.

This might be a bit far out, but that thing in the middle looks like the Saudi penninsula, with the Red Sea and then parts of Egypt and North Africa thrown in for good measure. (Kind of like seeing shapes in clouds!) What it actually looks like is the extent of Ancient Egypt... Why that would be on an Iraqi medal, I haven't a clue.

Syrian
Not Iraqi, Syrian.
The 6th October Medal -- Awarded for Syrian participation in the October/Ramadan/Yom Kippur War with Israel of 6-24 October 1973. The medal was also awarded to civilians and foreign nationals who contributed to Syria’s war effort. Established: By Legislative Decree No. 19 of 15 February 1974. Obverse: A 44-mm bronze five-pointed rayed star, with floreate designs between the rays. In the center, a circular medallion, enameled white, with a dark-enameled map of the Arab world in the center. Suspended by an ornate trophy of arms and Syrian eagle. Reverse: The Arabic legend “???” or “Medal of 6th October”. Ribbon: Red, with a 4 mm white center stripe edged by 4 mm black stripes. See: http://faculty.winthrop.edu/haynese/...ria/syria.html FYI, Ed Haynes Last edited by Ed_Haynes; 04-11-2003 at 12:43 PM. |

This forum is amazing! I'm going back to Georgia soon and I'll speak to the family again and ask about Iraq v. Syria. Maybe I just misunderstood. That happens a lot. I don't speak Georgian and I'm a rank beginner in Russian and my interpreter/bodyguard is a little unclear on the details sometimes. Thank you!
