A Research Story
Won an OPW II a couple of years ago from an auction. (Lot 2311) Don't do this often, but it was advertised as coming "with research" from the archives. So what the heck. But what was sent was only the citation - no award card, no proof that THIS award was actually awarded to the man in the citation. So I thought that perhaps all I got was a nice OPW II. The citation could have been for anyone... Ahhh, I can be cynical sometimes...
Time passes, accumulated a few more awards, saved my pennies, and decided to submit some for research. While having “the” citation for my OPW II, I wasn't convinced it was actually the citation for this award. So at the risk of paying twice for what I already have I submitted it – OPW II, s/n 166.566. Research just came back with the award card. Nice – it verifies that my OPW II was indeed awarded to the comrade in the citation. And it's a good leadership cite. Battalion commander on the offensive in Ukraine, summer of 1944. No direct heroics, simply a good battlefield commander. But it's better, because it's the award card for this man. Pleased as can be, though it's obvious that a superb group was broken up and scattered some time ago. (Sorry for being cryptic and not posting the award card scan. Been asked to not post returned docs on the web, per the recent 'crackdown' in Russia on research. Good news is that research is still coming.)

Re: A Research Story
Cool story. Patience is a virtue, good things come to those who wait, and all o' that sorta stuff. ;)
Thanks for the interesting weblink as well.
