This one i offered on a internet site by a dealer...
He says it is original and so on. Any opinions? If you believe it is a original visor cap, what could be a good price for it?

That would appear to be a M1949 air forces officers cap. On first apearance it looks ok, the peak is made from compressed carboard and is the right shape, the wings look ok from here but I would like to see a close up of the wings...how are they attached? Is there two thin wire prongs as the back or are they slightly thick prongs? The wear on the inside will be a giveaway, is there cracks and wear on the sweatband? There should be a lot seeing that the cap is from 1949.
Gut feeling would say that it is ok but I would need closer photogrpahs of the inside and of the wings.

Price is hard to say. The cap itself is not that different from earlier ones and later ones. The real rare thing is the cap badge cockade which was only used in the M1949 and replaced in the M1955 with a regular type.
With hats this rare there is no set market price. $75 is a good price but $150 is not out of the question if you "need" it to complete a uniform or fill a gap in say your air force hat collection. I would have paid $150 for it "at the drop of a hat" when I was looking for one years ago to go with the M1949 air force jacket I once owned.... You might find it cheaper that $75 but you might not find one for a long time. Shawn |
