The confusion is because threads evolve and change.
The original question of the thread by PM was about specific, official WWII-era insignia, in other words were there Soviet equivalents of the US and even German insignia? The answer is clearly no and we all agree on that. However, as Pavel points out (nice web name by the way, I like the T-28A) there were other types of insignia. Yes, they were rare and some of us were aware of that they existed. Yes they were not the same as the patches. However, I for one find them still interesting, even if slightly off the original topic. No problem in a thread evolving from one topic to another. While these vehicle unit insignia are clearly rare and seem to evolve from tactical markings, this 1999 Russian book you quote from has interesting conclusions. I was not aware of how "advanced" the insignia system became in some units. Shawn |

Shawn,
Yes, and the book I mentioned is not as thorough as it might be and is just one of the first attempts to uncover the subject, hope there will others follow. IMHO the most invaluable sources are memoirs either published or just interviews (like that with I.A.Yakushin), unlike photos they were never studied as thouroughly as they worth - f.ex. I found that very informative story about 231kap in quite rare memoirs by Vasiliy S. Petrov. Well I swear I'll say nothing more here and will not push this thread to the offtop anymore :) Yours, Pavel PS It should be said that your web name is much better and abit unusual for a forum in English ;))) |
