I don't have precise datas about this, but it is clear Ustinov was one of the very few -if not the first - recordman of lenin orders bearer!

What exactly did Ustinov accomplish during his career (apart from having yearly birthdays that generated awards) that gave him all these orders?

Ustinov was quite an achiever.

After graduation from college he was assigned to a large mill "Bolshevik", where he managed to advance from an engineer to a head of the enterprise in just 4 years!

Two weeks before beginning of GP war Ustinov became Peoples Comissar of the Arms, an important branch of Soviet economy in charge of designing, testing and manufacturing of military equipment and weapons. Ustinov occupied top Weapons Minister post through the end of WWII.

Later his industry was renamed into Ministry of Defence Industry. Ustinov was key person in dealing with nuclear weapons, as well as with missiles.

In 1957-1963 Ustinov was appointed Vice-Head of the Ministers' Council.

Finally, in 1976 Ustinov became Minister of Defence and Marshal of SU.

Quite a career!

Among Marshal Ustinov important foreign awards are:

Hero of Mongolia
3 Sukhe Bator orders
Hero of Chechoslovakia
2 Orders of Dimitrov
2 Orders of Karl Marx

After the war

part of the question was, Can anyone tell me about his later deeds?

Here is what he did after the war.

After the war Aleksandr Pokryshkin remained in the military aviation, and mastered jet engineering.
He was one of the first to fly a MiG-9, and contributed to the development of other types of jet, as well.

His Post-War activities were indeed limited by politics. He had been difficult to Yakovlev, and also was not popular in Moscow generally. In the early postwar years he got ambiguous consideration from Stalin and others, due to his undiplomatic personality. His drinking returned, which was looked down upon a lot.

In 1948 he went to the Military Academy of Frunze, after some years of delay.
In 1953 he was promoted Major General; this was rather delayed, in comparison with his rapid career during the war.
In 1957 he got the post of "Inspector of the Fighter Arm".
In 1968-71 he was the commander of Air Defence of the country (PVO).
In 1972 he was promoted Air Marshal.
In 1972-81 he was the Chairman of the Central Committee of DOSAAF (Volunteers to support the Army, Air Force, and Fleet)
in 1979-84 he was an Honorary Member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR .
As usual, he was given posts of questionable power; he has a figurehead, really. His drinking and poor political standing were the cause of this.

He wrote some books:

" Wings of Fighters ",
" Your Honorary Duties ",
" Sky of War ",
" To Discover Yourself in Battle".

He died on November 13, 1985, and is buried in Moscow.

Eddie.

Alexandr Filosofov - HSU #6807 ?

Dietrich,

Coming back to this thread...
Could this Captain (tank commander) be the Hero of Soviet Union Alexandr Filosofov, HSU #6807 awarded on 24.03.45 ?
My Russian language practice is not good enough to make me able to check in detail each point, but I find the photo bery close, and more important his list of awards corresponds (except the Red Star... that he may have got after the pic has been taken ?).

I'm sure Russian speaking members could check this... and maybe confirm this identification has been solved ?
What do you think ?

Cheers.

Ch.

Christophe,
how did you remember this old thread and come up with someone so close? The match of awards is convincing. I thought the same about the photo but then I looked at details. For example, the ear seems to be different, and the ear can serve as identifier like a fingerprint.

Thanks for your interest and help.

Dietrich,

This could be called "The return of the clones" :D . I was first also very convinced... and that's why I wanted to post it... , just in case. But I agree some details could be subject to discussion.

But, more important, finally did you find who was your Hero ? If not, did you have more details ?

Cheers.

Ch.

Guys,

Just to add my two pennies - according to the article, Filosofov served in the 184th rifles division, and the HSU on the photo is wearing a tanker uniform.
