Last one with very strange pin, I doubt whether it is a soviet production.

I´m pretty sure it´s a fantasy piece for tourists. And since it is so, it is not soviet production.

This badge came on a KGB Captains uniform that I got out of Europe many years ago... I believe the timing was that I received this before the fantasy versions started showing up of this badge design.
I have wondered about this one… but even I know if it is missing the mint mark, and has a hex nut… it should be throwing up a red flag (no pun intended). I have not seen another like it. What are your thoughts?

Cageybee,
This is, as Andreas rightly pointed out, an obvious fake. Marc |

Gentlemen,
While I fully agree the likely hood of this being a fantasy badge, I believe there may be a real version of this badge out there, according to the book "Badges of the Legal Protective Organs of the USSR." It is on page 126, 2.2.03. Is this reference in error? Best regards, Wayne (By the way... I know Shawn and fully respect his experience!)

Wayne,
I have this book too. The problem with it is that it contains drawings, not pictures of actual badges. As was pointed out previously, this specific badge has never been documented otherwise, which, in my book, makes it at best "doubtful". Marc |

I have always had the opinion that I am 99% sure that this was a fantasy badge.
The issue of being in the book, that not all badges have mint marks (especially locally made or procured), and some other issues have left open the other 1%. For example, I assume this is a legitimate badge… "The Mint mark"... BTW, Shawn has seen photos of this badge before (from me) some time ago... maybe these will jog his memory.

This is not a mintmark from Moscow or Leningrad, but a factory trademark. This mark indicates the piece was not made at the national level, but an order placed with a factory that produced such badges. This calls into question its "official" status.
I took the information from a Russian collector booklet, but I have identified and illustrated about 30-40 of these enumerated in my upcoming booklet on veteran znachki. |
