No way, I just tried to break off screwpost from a badge with gunk. No glue or epoxy could be this strong.

Epoxy resins can have very high adhesive strength and toughness, especially the varieties used in construction and boat construction/repair.

Alexei,

Actually, in the 1960's, the French build an airliner (Caravelle) whose wings were glued with epoxy, and did not use a single rivet!!! So, yes, epoxy could be this strong :thumbsup

I always passed on these, but now that you've mentioned it, the black stuff is a frequent occurrence. Just might have to pick a few up.

Actually we can ask Eric to post a picture of the back of his badge with this gunk removed. Alexei
My otlichnik is now mounted and I don't think I 'de-gunked' it anyway but I *did* de-gunk my Guards Badge.

The "Dr. Erik's creme" I refer to is just warm water and a stiff nylon brush. Like I say it removes patina as well as black gunk.

And my strictly unedjucated guess was that the black gunk was a substandard type of soldering flux? I think I see blobs of solder under the gunk on the base of the screwposts on my otlichnik and Guards badge.

Eric,

If that is the case, try using some acetone instead of "Dr. Erik's creme"; you'll remove the gunk, but you'll also keep the patina :D

Having trouble finding pure acetone here. Can find nail polish remover but that stuff has got additives in it.
And in regards to the Guards Badge in question it was only the reverse that was cleaned. I felt that that was not a big issue. I would *NEVER* do that to an obverse of any medal. :)

Hi Guys, I would welcome any input on this tankers badge please.

It was purchased from a friend who was unsure about it. So he sold it to me for the price of a repro. I felt that it was good, but it has what appears to be an old repair to the screw post.

Cheers, Ade.
