The Minimalist Approach
Gents,
It's refreshing to see HSUs who take the minimalist approach when it comes to wearing their decorations. No extraneous "I've been there/I'm a veteran" anniversary medals and badges - just his principal valor/service orders and medal. Retired Guards Col N. I. Dolzhanskiy was a senior pilot in the 165th Guards Ground Attack Aviation Regiment, 10th GGAAD, 2nd Air Army, 1st Ukrainian Front. Regards, slava1stclass |

Special Purpose KGB HSU
Gents,
Col V. S. Belyuzhenko was assigned to the KGB's Special Purpose Operational Groups "Zenit" and "Kaskad." He joined State Security in 1963. Graduated from the KGB's Upper School in 1967. Master of Sport in the martial art of sambo. After graduating from KYOC in 1970, was assigned to the Special Reserve of Directorate "C", of the KGB's 1st Main Directorate. Saw combat action in Afghanistan from October 1979 to February 1980 while assigned to "Zenit" and then from July-October 1980 while assigned to "Kaskad." Wounded twice and also suffered a concussion. His last wound was very severe and resulted in six months in a cast followed by five months to regain full use of his leg. HSU title awarded November 24th, 1980. Note his wound stripes. Re: Special Purpose KGB HSU
looks like an airbone parade jacket (with light blue aviation piping) isn't it?

It seems that nearly all photos of KGB officers wearing their award badges were taken in such a way as to diminish them in comparison to the rest of the awards - probably for a great number of reasons. Phillip

Re: Special Purpose KGB HSU
Thanks.:thumbsup It looks similar to a regional border guard badge, but I think it might be a particular badge from the special operations division. I also believe that "Zenit" fell under the purview of the border guard branch whereas "Alpha" and "Vympel" were under the intelligence branch and "Vympel" was at the direct disposal of the FCD (First Chief Directorate) during the invasion of Afghanistan.
The last badge that is completely hidden by the cut of the uniform is now the one I'd like to see because it appears to be round from the angle we have. I'd also like to know more about the colorful badge next to the Honored Employee of State Security badge, but like I said, I think there was either a conscious or unconscious effort made to make these not so easy to examine in photographs. Phillip

HSU Guards Major A. I. Krapivin
Gents,
A wonderfully crisp image. Note his RSFSR Supreme Soviet badge - stunning. He was a deputy at its 3rd-5th Sessions. During the GPW he commanded a motorized rifle battalion in the 45th Mechanized Brigade, 5th Mechanized Corps, 6th Tank Army, 2nd Ukrainian Front. Awarded his HSU title for action in Romania. Photos
Gents,
A nice set of images of unidentified Ushakov Medal awardees. The interesting aspect is the date range of these images - clearly for extremely post-GPW action. Regards, slava1stclass |
