Re: Guards Badges

This one came in today. It's a nice, old one. A little bit of enamel damage, but that's OK, it's maybe 60 years old.
The reverse is greatly oxidized; I may try and lightly clean that. The screwplate is pretty heavily damaged; the lower portion I can read: "Moscow", however I can't make out the production factory.

This is a tall one; straight up and down it's 47mm and at it's longest it's a full 50mm.

Re: Guards Badges

Eric,

I would suggest that you remove that verdigris or it will continue to eat up the metal.

Re: Guards Badges

Will do. The usual soap, water and toothbrush? Or something more harsh?

Re: Guards Badges

Yes, I'd try that first. If the verdigris reappears you could always use special chemicals, available to coin collectors.

Re: Guards Badges

I tried the soapy water & toothbrush method; it didn't help at all. So I tried a brass-bristle brush on the reverse of the screwplate. That worked, but it also stripped off all the nice chocolate brown patina. :(
But then I noticed that the screwplate was something else before it got stamped into shape. I don't know if you can see it in my images but it looks like it was some other type of award as I can see some letters on it. They are most obvious on the reverse image to the right of the screwhole.
Weird.... Recycling at the factory no doubt?

Ouch!!!!! :(

Yes, the screwplate is a recycled factory reject. I have seen similar screwplats for orders and even center medallions for Red Stars.

Re: Gwardia - badge; original ?

Nice original wartime badge. But the screwback plate will not be original to it.

Cheers, Ade.

Re: Gwardia - badge; original ?

It's original GPW manufacture, no doubt. As for the screw nut, I've seen Pobeda factory nuts on many different badges from this period through the late 1950s - mid-1960s and many factories made these badges during the war, so I wouldn't dismiss it altogether. Besides, if it works...:)

Thanks. Nice badge, the screwpost is a replacement.
