Shane and Tal,
I am not sure if he can contribute much of the backfground on the doc. From dealing with Igor (the owner of the site that sells the Stalin Prize doc) in the past I've got impression that he's not a collector and focuses only on dealer activities. As such, I am not sure he would show much of the interest in our discussions. But asking is worth a try, as he is very knowledgeable dealer though. William |

Oh, it was a lovely book. But three grand, for a book! Tal, the most I've ever paid for any single award is around $450. I'd pay more than this, if I found something I really wanted, but this is a hobby to me.
I'd like my daughter, and hopefully our grandchildren when we get some, to have something of their history. BTW, my daughter's only one year old, so I've got many years of collecting ahead yet :) Kind Regards, Shane Cook. |

Following up the discussion, does anyone have updated data on number of awarded Stalin prizes each year?
I've heard that initially the number was really low - say 20-30 recipients in the first years and the number increased towards the last years of existence of Stalin Prize. Also, how much would a Diploma form mid-1940s be worth these days? Rare Stalin Prize document in Presentation case with the name of recipient engraved on the plaque. Stalin prize 2nd class This Stalin Prize was awarded in 1946 Awarded to a group of comrades: page with facsimile (not original like on previous posts) of Stalin's signature |

Stalin Prize 1953
Manfred Baron von Ardenne (1907 - 1997) Stalin Prize 1953
Manfred Baron von Ardenne (German) got the Stalin Prize in 1953 and he got 100.000 Rubel with the award. He got the prize for his work related to the soviet atomic bomb. He has a quite interesting curriculum vitae: link to a museum: http://www.dhm.de/lemo/html/biografien/ArdenneManfred/ With 15 years he got his first patent. He invented a multiple electronic tube, which was the basis element for a new radio. With 18 years he starts to study physics, mathematic and chemistry. But after 2 years he abort the study, because he thought the study is to unflexible and outdated. So he makes self-instruction. In 1930 he ionvented the "Flying Spot Scanner" which leads to the first fully electronic working television picture tube. During the war he worked for the german atomic programm. After the war till 1950 he worked for the soviets in Suchumi in Georgia. He invented a few things in relation to the soviet atomic programm. For that he got 1953 the Stalin Prize. In 1954 with the 100.000 Roubles he founded the only private research institute in the German Democratic Republik. Till 1990 he lead the institue with 512 workers. He got over 600 patents. |
