Thanks guys for answering my question. Makes more sence now. Particularly for situation with orders in Russia.

I've never had a problem disclosing any of my numbers on items I sell. I guess it depends on the seller.
Ok, depends on the seller. It would be good though to know from the sellers that do hide serial numbers why they do so ...

Gentlemen,

Besides poor memory there is another reason why I would use XXXs - when I am too lazy to type all the digits if it doesn't matter for the purpose of a particular discussion. In this case the number of XXXs would just indicate the serial number range.

Alexei makes a good point. Laziness is another good reason why this is done. The first few digits are really all that is necessary when considering rarity in buying or selling. For example a Red Star in the 2XXX range gives you enough information to gauge rarity.

Art, and how 2XXX is different from 9XXX or just XXXX ?? Any 4-digit Red Stars are rare isn't it? And any of them would cost the same.

LeoAU,

While its true that 2xxx or 9xxx or just xxxx might or might not be the same in price on a particular Order, Art's point is still valid. I think we are getting too literal in this discussion as there are many valid reasons for listing a serial number in this manner. I understand your point in that the complete serial number would be nice and it looks like the dealer has something to hide when he does this, but its not true in all cases. If you see this, the safest thing to do is to ask the dealer for the entire serial number. If they will not supply it, stay away from this person. I can think of no valid reason where a dealer would not be willing to do this if asked by a customer.

Just my two cents,
Ed

LeoAU,

Ed makes a good point. We are getting to literal here. My example was just to illustrate that the entire serial number isn't really necessary when shopping for an award ( unless you need a specific number ). However, when asked specifically for serial numbers, no dealer should be reluctant to disclose them. If they are, something is fishy.
