We certainly hope they were. I put them in the same catagory as five-sided suspensions; when we get, let us say, a Defense of Stalingrad medal we are, or should be much happier when we find it comes with a two-piece steel suspension as opposed to the generic aluminium suspension with their obligitory new ribbons. To me a new suspension and ribbon is incongruous when attached to an original medal. Same with screwplates. Two-piece suspensions are easy to see; variations of screwplates have not been looked at in any depth. Yet.

Given the bags of orphaned screwplates I have seen in Ulaanbaatar, I am left wondering how separable they were.
Yeah, I know, I see them on ebay as well. Gives me a chill when I see them. One part of me says they are just manufacuter's overruns. The other part thinks that too many orders have been scrapped for silver and gold content and all that remains are the screwplates. :(

Eric,

I am afraid that only your second assumption is true :(

Re: Dating Screwplates

When I get some time I will take out all my 40's screwbacks and photograph them with their screwplates. If other want to do that as well maybe we can start a thread about them and invite Marc and Paul and some of our Russian experts to opine on dating them?

Re: Dating Screwplates

And three more. The ORB plate has a real nice patina to it making me hope it is: A) original and B) silver.

Re: Dating Screwplates

The first two in the second set are different from the others and both have the dimples on the reverse of the plate making them......I don't know what. Earlier maybe? A different factory?
In any event it looks like just me and you, Il mio amico, have any interest. Do you have any of these non-standard plates in your collection?

Re: Dating Screwplates

Eric,

It is not lack of interest, but the quasi-impossibility to acertain for sure that the order and the screwplate were originally "joined for better and for worst" at MD.

Re: Dating Screwplates

Yes, it's very difficult dating them ... But at least we can make a database of their diversity.
