Re: plt./lt. Leon Burak, tank driver/mechanic, 2nd tank regiment, 1st Armoured brigad
And now, a bit about his living conditions that were not so great - he lived with his wife, children and mother-in-law in a tiny flat that was badly damaged during the war and not very well repaired afterwards (he lived in Błonie - the same town he liberated during the war)
in 1987 he wrote to the local authorities if it would be possible for him to get another apartment and got "no" for an answer - he was given a proposition of getting a piece of land to build a house, but he had no money to build it, so he refused. However, the same year he wrote to the Council of Ministers and they told him that he can get a financial equivalent for the house and land he left in the territory which now is in Soviet union, but he has to present some testiomony that his family had anything there. |

Here's also a letter he wrote - he describes his living conditions and gives the argument that he is a decorated war veteran, who drove the tank that was among the first to reach the city center during its liberation.

And here are the testimonies of two people - legaly confirmed - that he indeed had house and land in Kraśne.
Also a pre-war civilian binocular came with this group (will be photographed later) - may be unrelated, but those were a popular "trophy" of soldiers (mainly officers and NCO's) if found in abandoned German houses. |
