Re: Not a Fake Border Guard Badge

I'm not trying to hijack your thread, but speaking of great prices on fairly rare older pieces, have a look at this beauty I just got in today. I met the seller on ePay, believe it or not, and he is quite a good guy. He is fully aware that he could have gotten three times what he asked me to pay, so I couldn't pass it up. All-Union KGB issue 50th anniversary of the Soviet Border Guard badge - the mint managed to practically hide the LMD mark on the reverse (which unlike my previous piece, doesn't make a complete "loop" around the mark, but when compared to a known authentic one already in my collection, I believe it to be genuine). As you must know Alex, it always feels good to make a great deal with someone who sells at great prices.:D Phillip

Re: Fake Border Guard Badge
I like it.
This badge without inscpription (MGB, KGB;MWD) was awarded from 1957 – 1964. This version was issued after the Border Guards were transferred to the control of KGB in 1957 and until the change in the design of the badge in 1964. regards Andreas |

Re: Fake Border Guard Badge
My reply last night was not posted because I - as usual - am trying to do 10 things at once on my humble laptop.;)
Nonetheless, I like the badge and think that if anything has been done to it at all, it was a repaired/replaced screw post. Since I can't hold it in my hands, I cannot say for sure about that. The main clue is not the screw nut (normally Pobeda factory), but the large amount of solder. It really has no impact on the overall quality - which is outstanding.:thumbsup While we are on the subject of these, I wanted to make an observation. I have been watching the prices of various KGB/MVD items carefully (as everyone might suspect:rolleyes:) and the trend seems to be toward more sensible prices. For example, this badge that I just got in I paid about 1/4 of what it was selling for a year ago. This also makes me a bit suspicious - as does everything:rolleyes: - but I am very confident it is a real, somewhat more elusive MVD version of the same badge as above. There's some enamel repair to the star at the top, but otherwise in excellent condition for the 1952-57 period these were used. Now, all I have to find is its NKVD version (not in a hurry and not entirely sure they are real) and I'll have the set. Phillip

Re: Fake Border Guard Badge
Spot on.:thumbsup
- I don't really collect NKVD stuff, but for the sake of symmetry, I will keep looking for one, though I've only seen one real one in the last five or more years and I don't expect to see another one at a good price any time soon. Phillip
