sokolov

I think Sokolov was the last marshal. Could this be right. He was given the order of Zhukov in 1995.

Marshal Yazov is still around as well... As is Marshal Sokolov...

For what I know - in all official correspondence they are called Marshal of the Soviet Union.

Ogarkov committed suicide in 1994. Marshals of Soviet Union Sokolov, Yazov, and Kulikov are still alive. There is one marshal of Russian Federation - Sergeev. I know that he has Marshal Star of the same type as Marshals of Soviet Union

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Never answer at the end of the day. I only went by death dates in a quick scan of a list of MSUs I have and thus missed the living.

I also mis-spelled Ogarkov.

As Eugene and others point out Sokolov and Kulikov and Yazov lived into the Russian era. I thought that I had heard that Yazov died earlier this year but I must be wrong.

Anyway, the point is has anyone seen pictures of MSUs in Russian Marshals uniforms? Sergeyev is the only one I can recall in one and he was never an HSU.

Shaun,
Those Marshals are Marshals of Soviet Union and not Marshals of Russian Federation.
They shouldn't have Russian Federation marshal uniform since they didn't serve in post Soviet time.
Only one person who is eligible to wear such uniform is marshal Sergeev.

Eugene,

The USSR no longer exists. While this does not effect most veterans who can wear their old uniforms I was wondering if such high profile veterans may have been accorded newer uniforms.

For example, an MSU who retired say prior to 1969 was still issued/authorised a new M1969 uniform to wear.

Marshal's uniform, Russian Federation

Shawn:

Does the photo that Eugene posted show the marshal in a Russian Federation uniform? It seems to be in that kind of feldgrau color that they adopted. I can't really see the shoulder boards well enough to tell for sure.

My guess is that Putin would be quite pleased to issue all old Soviet retirees new Russian uniforms with "retired" shoulder boards on them. He seems to be quite anxious to meld the two eras into a more seamless memory. And the senior officer corps was never his political enemy. He gets to dump that off on Gorbachev and Yeltsin.

He doesn't seem too happy with his admirals, though. Any admirals of the fleet from Soviet times still alive?

ranks

bob,

there were only 3 full admirals of the fleet of the ussr; Isakov, kuznetzov, gorshkov) and all are dead ( i am 99% sure gorshkov is in the dirt).

the uniform in the above shot is clearly russian, not soviet; the reverse leaf embroidery as well as the buttons at the end of the boards are dead giveaways.
