OK, I rest on your experience. I've seen plenty of E.German and Czech badges with this type of pin. Also, my experience is largely with Soviet znachki post 1970 era and other badges pre-1950. The badges I've seen from the 1960's haven't been large or heavy enough to support such a pin.

Greg,
I've ID'ed your badge in post #1 (the flag one). It is the first USSR olympic team pin, used at the Helsinki Games in 1952. Marc |

Paul,
As far as I know, this badge was made in the USSR for use of the NOC and the Soviet delegation at the Games. It was the standard way of doing things at the time; nowdays, almost all NOC team pins are manufactured in 3~4 countries. If I remember right, that was the first time that the USSR was invited to compete in the Olympics. Marc |

OK - just curious. I know of instances when the Soviets had made pins abroad and I wondered if this was one.
Now a different issue. I thought the "spear point" pole top was only placed on a military banner. Am I wrong and were these also used for other purposes? |

I've seen that type of finial used by Young Pioneers, but then again they were in parade or guarding an eternal flame memorial

Marc,
Thanks again for I.D.ing the flag badge. By the way, and in your research, did you happen to see an image of the badge being worn. Would like to match something like that with the pin. Thanks. Greg |

Thanks
I collect "flag pins" and in another realm am a vellixologist (sp) flag dude.
I had this pin that I could not identify which I too thought was military but had not unit designation. I am glad to know (or claim now) that it is an olympic pin. A friend worked on the closing ceremonies in Athens and she will be impressed. A. |
