Research Projekt Odessa medal
Ruiz and I started to identify all the different variants of the Odessa medal.
This is what we have till now. So did other members of the foum observe different variants of the Odessa medal. Different design etc... Odessa medal: 1. Variant - separate soldered ring 1a. sickle handle longer (with dot) 1b. sickle handle shorter (without dot) 2. Variant - ring as part of the medal (round ring inside) 3. Variant - ring as part of the medal (V-shaped incision ring inside) best regards Andreas |

Re: Research Projekt Odessa medal
I have heared that in 1993 the mint produced a voenkomat variations of the Odessa medal without gilding? On the same dies as the original medal. Is the story true?

Re: Research Projekt Odessa medal
Alfred I think this info will be interesting for your research.
If someone with good English could translate it please. Quote:
I don't know how true it is, but I know what was going on in 90s

Re: Research Projekt Odessa medal
Thanks,
I have read this via google translator too and that was the reason I asked here. thanks Andreas --------------------------- Open page describing the medal "For Defense of Kiev. This is the last of the established medals that were awarded specifically for the actions of the Great Patriotic War. The medal has varieties. Samples medals called "an error on the reverse" in no way be considered a collector's material for two reasons. The first - a copy of the medal "For Defense of Sevastopol", "For the Defence of Odessa", "For the defense of the Soviet Arctic," "For the defense of Kiev" and "For the liberation of Belgrade" were made in 1993. after the collapse of the USSR on special order traders Soviet awards, "clandestine" manner at the Moscow Mint. While the errors on the reverse of the medal "For defense of Kiev" and "For the liberation of Belgrade" were made by accident, because of ignorance of the staff of the mint. Users punch in these "native" cliches, the same as the samples "voenkomatovskih. Therefore, different (in addition to errors on the reverse of a medal "For Defense of Kiev" and "For the liberation of Belgrade") complete absence, any traces of oxidation, and neayanym connecting ring. In addition, these medals may not have any traces of wearing natural origin. They have never and never were given. This is the second reason that these medals can not relate to the original Soviet awards. Only a copy. Unfortunately, the first mistake that Nicholas Merlan, in his book "The medals of the USSR", after it endorsed Paul McDaniel. For this reason, many, especially beginners, collectors have been misled and samples with an error on the reverse, "sold at" crazy "prices. Although themselves are simply defective copies. A coin issued in 1993 have a few differences - nezapayanoe connecting ring, the lack of gilding on the medal nezolochenaya block. At voenkomatovskih medals 80-s all these symptoms are present. |

Odessa Dies
The faces in the pictures are from Odessa medals posted on one Russian forum. They were said to be genuine. If you compare the faces, you can clearly see the differences. Do you agree that both types of faces are official stamps?

I don't know but there could've been more than one die, or striking. That might account for the differences?
Did a little photoshop fiddling; there are some slight differences. So slight I'd I'm not sure what to make of them. I'm no Odessa expert but I'd think the ring and the lettering would be the key in identifying the good from the bad. I'm sure Marc, Paul or Alexei can set us straight.
