Just a note..
On the topic of the Ushakov and pricing...
Have any of you guys had the following conversation with your spouses or significant others?.... "Honey, we could purchase that new home...OR, there is this Soviet Order that would look great in our collection"... It is a conversation I love to have on occasion, even though I always know the response I will get :D

I once threatened to sell my wife's car, AND our dog to pay for a group... My normally VERY tolerant-to-collecting wife became VERY untolerant VERY quickly with that idea... (I didn't end up getting the group either...) :) --Dave |

Inflation
Just one remark... about inflation !!
One year ago - as Tal posted it in the Forum on 07.01.02 - one Ushakov 1st Class was on sale for 60,000$ (estimated). This award had a COA by PMD and a rating of 10/10! So : * July 2002 : rating of 10/10 : 60,000$ * August 2003 : 8/10 : 110,000$. Even if the real selling price will probably be discounted and be eventually less than 110K$, my only comment is : No comment !! BTW, does someone know where the Ushakov 1st Class of last year landed ? Ch. |

In that case, the SN was unfortunately not disclosed... (at least to the members of the Forum!).
But we have to keep in mind they ALL have very low SN : PMD says Ushakov 1st Class has only been awarded 47 times !! He observed SN in the range of 3 - 29 !! But, you may be right.... may be it is an explanation... ;) Just to let you know, as an update, that the Ushakov 1st Class #7 is not any more for sale on the website of this Dealer. Sold ? Has anyone any idea ? About the Nakhimov 1st Class #107; it is still for sale on the same website. Even if Ushakov 2nd Class is not the rarest piece, one of our favourite dealers has recently put for sale on his website a documented group of 3 decorations including Order of Ushakov 2nd Class #188, in near mint condition - 9.5 out of 10 condition rating (a real superb piece, worthy of our pics databases!!). here is part of the seller's description : "Issued to Hero of the Soviet Union Viktor Tikhonov, commander of a Baltic Fleet torpedo boat squadron. Comes with McDaniel authentication certificate on Ushakov. Awards: Order of Ushakov, 2nd cl., #188, Type 1 Var. 2 (6 rivets), #188; Order of the Patriotic War, 1st cl., #142527, circa 1944; Order of the Red Star, #2878224. All three awards are in excellent condition and show nice, consistent silver patina. McDaniel certificate of authenticity on Ushakov shows extraordinary 9.5 out of 10 condition rating. Document: order booklet, July 1943 issue. The document contains entries for the above orders and several other decorations that are not available – including the Hero Star and Order of Lenin issued with it. Captain, 3rd cl. Viktor Tikhonov commanded 4th Squadron of the Baltic Torpedo Boat Brigade. Over the course of the war he took part in 123 combat cruises. In September 1944 he was involved in massive small craft attack (up to 130 of MTBs and similar small vessels) and naval infantry landing on Moon Sound islands. Tikhonov’s squadron was instrumental in capturing a bridgehead. His unit was also credited with sinking 10 enemy ships. Included: Xerox copy and translation of the article about Viktor Tikhonov in the official catalog “Heroes of the Soviet Union” (contains his photo). $18,000.00 ." #188. Let's appreciate the details... Interesting to notice that this group - unsold for nearly 6 months - is now proposed at $19,000 !! I did not think inflation could spontaneously self-generate, ex-nihilo... Ch. |

This dealer recently increased all his prices on high-end items, no miracle Ushakov set is higher now.

Christophe,
Ushakov order is one of the rarest Soviet awards, with only few ever offered for sale. I haven't seen one for sale for long time, except in the group offered by that specific dealer. If there's virtually no supply - what do you think happens to demand? William |

William,
I in this specific case, traditional exchange / market rules obviously don't apply because of the rarity of the item. But this increase of $1K (+ 5.5%) is, in fact, dictated by nothing rational in terms of market for the reasons already exposed by us... The only positive point is that the actual parity $ versus € (1.25 for 1.00) is a good thing for us Europeans. :) But do you think there could be a link between this exchange rate and the increase ? ;) How knows ? Sold ? Probably, as this order disappeared from the Dealer's website... Ch. |
