Here is an example:

Tretov referred to the very good website on Soviet visor caps, which I look at often. I think it is an excellent and very helpful site.
But the author of the site shows a visor cap of an officer of the Soviet merchant fleet that has a cap band with an embroidered design. He states that this must have been a personal modification by the owner of the cap. Yet I have an identical cap of the same period that also has the same embroidered cap band. So I think that this style of cap band was clearly worn on that type of Merchant officer hat at some point in time.

So in some areas we are still learning.

That's a very good point. I can hold off on making changes to it for a while. And yes, that cap web site is very good. I am somewhat surprised that there is still so much that we don't know about these caps and uniforms. Aren't there still many people out there who once worked for them who could provide insights into what they wore? I also think that, as Randy says, some of these caps were built using the materials on hand, which explains variations in visor styles, buttons, etc. Hopefully as collectors continue researching and sharing their findings we will learn more about the topic.

I have been thinking the very same thing..... Former state employees should be able to inform you about where their insignia was supposed to and not supposed to be.

The uniform hobby is nothing like as clear cut as the award hobby (not that that's a walk in the park either).

Re: Communications Ministry Cap?

Guys,

Actually, we do have a lot of information available. Every ministry published its uniform regulations, the same way as the armed forces did. The only problem is to get our hands on these publications, but once in a while, with a little bit of luck...
