Re: Victory Day
There was a traveling exhibt a number of years ago that included several of these banners. Also included were Goering's scorched uniform and other items taken from the bunker in Berlin. The exhibit traveled to, among other places, San Diego, CA where I saw it. There was much concern about neo-nazi types trying to venerate these items and the exhibit was arranged to thwart this- along with strict security. The banners were displayed thrown on the ground in a heap. A nazi eagle from the stadium at Nuremburg was on the ground as it would have fallen. It was a very powerful exhibit and I have never forgotten it. The fairly tacky items from the bunker were all the more powerful in underlining the banality of evil.

Re: Victory Day
For those of you interested YouTube has the parade with english translation and commentary. President Medeav's? speech was interesting in that he mentioned the importance of family's preserving war time documents and awards.
Also after reading many accounts of the chilling effects of the "uurrrahh" shouted by charging soldiers it was great to hear 9000+ voices and have a shiver fun up my spine. Here's the link: YouTube - Moscow Victory Day Parade 2009 English, Part One |

Re: Victory Day
Yes, many thanks. I had seen it in Russian but (of course) couldn't understand a word. Wish they hadn't learned production from CNN and could lose the banner over the botton third of the screen.
What does the line about "preserving awards" means for Folks Like Us? Something new? Or just the same old same old? |

Re: Victory Day
Well at this end of the world, it doesn't mean anything more than what it meant before. In other words: not much
