Darn about the screwbacks classification. I have collected T6:v1, v3, v6-v8, v10.1-v18 using this classification.

So what classification would you recommend?

Oh, I think it is a little misunderstanding. I did not say that Alex's classification is bad. It is a great one and very detailed. I just imply that I use a different approach in classification, so I can not answer any questions regarding his classification :)

jefflgarrison,
As majority of Red Stars have been fitting quite nicely into my little table (btw, it was created in 1999, and hasn't changed much since), your Red Star does not, and there's a reason for that - the serial number on it is buffed out, and new one engraved. Hence, you must disregard the serial number range, and try to match by reverse surface, mintmark and star's size only.

ok, so yes, it seems to have a funny place where the number is, but dang if it looks the same all over.

So, why engrave this one with a different number when the range for each order is overlaps? Cannot be for monetary gain.

Some war hero lost his and bought another and had it engraved with his number? Why not just request a new one? There were duplicates.

Someone wanted to sell it as a set with a book? Didn't buy it that way. Only the star.

I am confused about this star.

It probably was for monetary gain. It was probably altered to make it part of a set or fit an existing award booklet. Someone bought the set, realized his mistake, and then sold the RS without the booklet or other pieces.

Those two are the most close serial numbers that I could find. Thay both belong to a different variation, that covers an interval from 2.500.000 to 2.800.000. So Alex Filer and Desantnik were absolutely right. Originally this was an order from 980.000 - 1.750.000 range. Later somebody remove original number and engraved the new one (probably to fit with a document).

Who has it?

Mondvor,

In a private message you referenced #3840622 as being the highest known number. Do you know who it was given to and when?

Most of Red Stars with the numbers higher than 3.800.000 were unissued. However, some exceptions are known. This particular number 3840622 came without any documents in a mint condition, so I think it was unissued too.

This is my collection of Type 6 variations according to the website Soviet-Screwbacks.com

First picture is v1-10.1
Second picture is v10.2-18

Thanks to the site owner for pointing out the star that became T6:v5

Still looking for several from this variation. 2, 4, 6, 19
