There's so many variables to take into account, the greatest being, in my uninformed opinion, the amount of current applied.
As I recall I got a spare transformer from a leftover bin at a pawnshop for a few bucks. I needed a X* volt converter to do the job and I remember that I found a U, V, W, Y and Z volt converter before I found the X one. So maybe more juice is better? Or less? Who knows....
Regardless, I think that procedure would be harmfull to tha base metal of the medal anyway

* X being a low number, like 3 for instance.

Your right it would be easier to get another 3rd class but Im not very good at doing things the easy way!

Before I do anything though I will probably research it as a 3rd class in case it was done by the veteran and it turns out he was awarded two 3rd classes although it's unlikely.

Mark,

in most cases the gold plating is not very strong. To remove it just polisch
the area with tooth paste and a brush.
Years ago, I also bought a 3rd class glory with high serial number and gold
plating. I polished the gold away.

regards
Andreas

Don't forget to dismount the ribbon and suspension first!

It worked!

I decided to go with the tootbrush and toothpaste option because it was the easiest and least drastic of the offered soloutions and amazingly the gold came away really easily with very little scrubbing!

I have lost the patina off the front but I think its a good trade off for losing the fake gold plating.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice particularly Andreas!

Hi Mark,
Losing the patina is not that big a deal trust me it will return in a few months without you even trying. Silver does this by itself whether we like it or not.

How to remove bad enamel

Hello,

has anybody an idea or experience how to remove fake blue enamel from an
Oder of Labour Glory 2nd class to restore it to an original 3rd class?
