Re: Fake CheKa/NKVD/KGB Documents
Is the first page the only page with information?

I agree. It looks authentic. As I told you though, I am going to scan in a similar document when I get home for your comparison. Just send me an email so I can send you hi-res images that won't fit here.

Re: Fake CheKa/NKVD/KGB Documents
Personally it looks rather authentic BUT overly fresh. These booklets usually fell apart under the duress of daily carriage. This is barely touched AND desirably to folk who think every member of the NKVD was a super-spy and not an accountant.... The NKVD were accountants....... (amongst other boring and infrequently interesting things).
Where's the racket?!?

Re: Fake CheKa/NKVD/KGB Documents
Exactly. It looks convincing, but as you've pointed out, it's scary too.
In the plus column the document's ink looks old and the staples are rusty. Hard to tell on the doc's exterior cover and interior paper. There is just something about the red cover and even interior paper I don't like, but these were not printed or produced uniformly. Moreover there is nothing stopping someone from printing these booklets today and artificially aging them. In the negative column the stamp looks too fresh and exact so the deceptively attractive information can be read. I asked about the information since there usually should be more biographical information than just tick marks on the equipment issued. It's sad if our hobby is coming to this. Again, looks convincing, but I'd want to handle it. Some internet searching on the NKVD regiment may be able to produce some more information. |

Re: Fake CheKa/NKVD/KGB Documents
I think a podvig search of the name may help.
These books were supposed to be carried at all times. It only takes one rain shower to abuse the exterior (and often interior). Did this belong to a real desk jockey who never went outside? I would be given this, but I would not purchase it without a secure source behind it.

Re: Fake CheKa/NKVD/KGB Documents
I've got an excellent VV NKVD soldier's ID from about the same time period. The paper is so brittle that I not only have to be extremely careful with it, I use cotton gloves when handling it - as I did this evening in scanning each page in. The one staple that was left gave out during this process. I don't plan on taking it out of its "cocoon" again any time soon so I made the best copies I could on my old scanner without the distortion of going past 1200 dpi (again, on my scanner).
Here they are in a quick resize from cover to last page.

Re: Fake CheKa/NKVD/KGB Documents
...and the rest:
You can see that not much attention was paid to how perfect the stamp looked or how many they crammed onto one page. His list of weapons is interesting. Phillip
