I guess it sucked big time when they came out with the "Irreproachable Service" medals instead of these babys.

Hello Tanja76, welcome to the forum.
Your image was a bit dark so I took the liberty of brightening it to make it easier to see the details. I hope you don't mind. The Cyrillic "D" stands for duplicate. That means it was an official reissue of a lost or stolen award. As for the number I have no answers but I'm sure someone here will help.

I'm not so sure in this case the "D" stands for "Dublikat". Since it is upside down, it more resembles a maker's mark - a quality control stamp from a mint worker.
As to the s/n - good question. The "/" could be a "1" done by a different hand, or by the same guy that got distracted or lazy. Another possibility, though very remote is this award was the recipient's sixth awarding and this was a way to indicate it. However the mint engraver probably wouldn't know this unless it was something like a Victory Parade or some other kind of special awarding. My best guess is that it is actually 112.716 and maybe the engraver ran out of room on the final "1" to put in the lead "tail" event on the first two "1"s. |

Just received some research material back and I would like to share it with the members of this forum: CPT M a r k o v Mikheal Ivanovich Born 1910 Russian Unit: Komissar Battalion 1288 S.P. (if anyone know what SP or what this unit did, please let me know) Order issue date 21 DEC 41 The citation was signed by a LTG of the 33rd Army The hand writing was difficult to read by my translator. I hope you submitted the correct S/N for research ;)
1288 S.P. is probably 1288th Rifle Regiment (1288 Strelkovy Polk). |
