Re: Medal "For Victory Over Japan".

My records show:

Type 1 (thick) - Low = 111/High = 50432
Type 2 (thin) - Low = 50504/High = 54706

And then there is the question of that enameled "luxury" type (which I think is a fantasy piece).

Ed,

When you write "thick" and "thin", are you refering to the thickness of the medal?

Yes. A manufacturing variant, but with discrete serial-number blocks.

Not the thickness (width) of the legend (as with the 25th anniversary medal).

Re: Medal "For Victory Over Japan".

Thanks, that makes more sense. In my notes, I had written that there were 2 varieties (2mm and 1mm) of serial numbers :o

Re: Medal "For Victory Over Japan".

Would you happen to know when this final run of "lighter" Medals were produced and where?

It certainly puts to bed speculation on t'internet that less than 10,000 of these were awarded. No point making additional batches if you already have 40,000 piled up.

Re: Medal "For Victory Over Japan".

Urnukh (pp. 186-89) does not have detailed production information (and only he has done research, as distinct from engaging in guessing). He shows the range in numbers as 150-40,000 (though -- big surprise -- Choibalsan's was 00001) for type 1 and 40200-62000 for type 2.

Straddling the change-over, I have 39142 (documented) and 52390 (undocumented, the lowest type 2 documented award that lives with me is 54271). That is a pretty big gap. But let me fetch them home and check the dates on the documents, though that isn't always iron-clad.
