From Marshal Koldunov's Photos...
Here's a pic of an Afghanistan-era unit getting awarded the Order of the Red Banner in front of God and Country (look at the brass!) Anyway, if you'd like a bigger image of this photo, contact me, as this is a small cropped part of the overall photo.
Enjoy! --Dave |

Looking at the pic in full size, look what's hanging from the flag! The actual Order!

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but the more I look at the photo... Wow! This is definately a unit award for Afghanistan service... Look at the awards on some of these fellows- the fellow on the far left has a Red Star and wound stripe, the fellow on the far right has a Red Star, Military Merit medal and two wound stripes!

Dave,
It may be related to Afghanistan but it is not for a military unit. The Banner is that of the Komsomol of the Army and Navy. Shawn |

Shawn-
Why did you have to burst my bubble like that????? ;) I'll admit- in my excitement, I forgot to read the flag. I guess that would have helped! --Dave |

Hi,
In the Soviet navy, ships that were honoured with an order used a special version of the naval ensign where the order was incorporated into the flag, as opposed to a ribbon attached to it. Here's the regular naval ensign: http://www.fotw.net/images/s/su~1950.gif Here's the ensign for ships honoured as "guard" which shows a ribbon: http://www.fotw.net/images/s/su~1950w.gif And here's the ensign for a vessel that was honoured with the order of the red banner: http://www.fotw.net/images/s/su~1950z.gif (All images from the "flags of the World" website www.fotw.net/flags/index.html) Matthijs Peterse
