BTW, apparently the "A4" in the mint mark is supposed to indicate 14 K gold. Is that true? Alexei |

Sovvisor,
You bet! I just received a very nice copy of the HSL; impossible to tell from good scans, but once you had it in hand, there was very little doubt as to what it really is. Marc |

Keep in mind - there were official wearer copies, which were the same quality, just made from bronze instead of gold.
William I once had a book which lists biographies of many Bulgarian HSL recipients. If you have a HSL and are interested in knowing more about the person - let me know and I will try to find the book. William |

William, Unless wearer copies were made in light, white metal guilt with 18K gold, had a mushy mintmark and some faint casting porosity on the edge of one of the branches and on the letter 'O' in the word 'Geroi', I tend to think that the piece I got isn't exactly kosher ;) Marc |

Re: Gold Star "Hero Of The People's Republic Of Bulgaria".
Here's 26 of them for a start, Brezhnev's birthdays eating the lion's share as usual and most others getting a present for going into space or being 60, 70 or 80 years old.
Nikita Khrushchev Of The Soviet Union 1964 General Ivan Mihajlov (Military/Politician) 6th March 1967 Tsola Dragoycheva (Politician) 1968 Todor Zhivkov (Politician) 1971 and 1981 Bojan Balgaranov (Politician) 1972 Leonid Brezhnev Of The Soviet Union 1973, 1976 and 1981 Zahari Zahariev (Military) 1974 General Dobri Djurov (Military/Politician) 1976 Georgi Ivanov (Cosmonaut) 1979 Nikolai Rukavishnikov Of The Soviet Union (Cosmonaut) 1979 Aleksei Yelisejev Of The Soviet Union (Cosmonaut) 1979 Fyodor Tolbukhin Of The Soviet Union (Military) 1981 (Posthumously) Elisaveta Bagriana 1983 Hristo Prodanov (Mountaineer) 1984 (Posthumously) Aleksand'r Panajotov Aleksandrov (Cosmonaut) 1988 Anatoly Solovjev Of The Soviet Union (Cosmonaut) 1988 Viktor Savinykh Of The Soviet Union(Cosmonaut) 1988 Anton Jugov (Politician) 1989 Georgi Trajkov (Politician) Grisha Filipov (Politician) Karlo Lukanov (Politician) Peko Takov (Politician) Sava Ganovski (Politician) I will have an item to add to this thread very soon......

Re: Gold Star "Hero Of The People's Republic Of Bulgaria".
Here it is!
If only all fakes were this "good" it would make the hobby such an easier thing to participate it. This fake is so bad I was actually in awe of how bad it was for about 3 hours after receiving it. It could only be worse if they had spelt "Hero" or "Bulgaria" wrong. Let me run down just a few of the most obvious bits of dire workmanship. #1 Wrong suspension (the real one had a different ring). Ok so it has the wrong suspension, it could be one of the dozen or so trial pieces and prototypes that came onto the market about 18 months ago... #2 The front of the star doesn't come to a point. It could still be a prototype! #3 Strange damage on the "crotch" on the back. Could be from when the bad prototype was discarded by a worker at the mint. #4 A couple of raised blotches on the reverse at the edge of the star's points. Still it could be a prototype. #5 Strange almost unrecognisable "R" mintmark Could be a "grease" strike on the prototype. #6 A great big "valknut" shaped rough indentation over "HA" and half of "Bulgaria" Could have been the biggest grease strike ever! #7 Strange area on the left (as we see it from the reverse) arm where it looks machined away. The worker in the mint must have been playing with it! #8 Slight "pebbling" around all the lettering with all the other areas looking machined. They could have made it out of a mix of striking and casting? #9 It's FAKE! But if I paid enough money for it it has to be real. If you are waiting for #10 to prove to yourself it is real you have a problem. I could however see this Gold Star being a great addition to the chest of the "Spitting Image" Leonid Brezhnev puppet! Are they making fakes yet?

I have not heard of a specialised book on the Hero Of PRB. It would not be a very big book with only 58 awards (many multiple) and also the current popularity of Bulgaria's Communist period.
I have not yet found a fully comprehensive guide to the awards of the PRB although one book stands out from the rest; Petrov's. As an update; I do now have an official PRB list of all the recipients of the HPRB. There were many of these "mint surplus" sets (with or without Dimitrov) offered c 2005-2008 but never with paperwork (or at least real paperwork).
