Re: Hungarian Security
Here's some more images to consider, Phil. While the Vol. Fireman is the larger badge in area, it appears to have less weight than the others. It is nearly 100% reverse on the back; stamped out of brass. The central insignia is attached, probably by some sort of glue, so it's a two piece. Now, from what period? I'm not sure (it does LOOK earlier than the other two badges), but if anyone does know, please share.

Re: Hungarian Security
Well, for what it's worth, my experience has been that badges get lighter (lesser metals and alloys) and complexity and quality go down as time goes by and mints don't have the money or craftsmen they once did (or they just lose their will). Classic case in point are the Soviet academy graduate ("rhomb") badges. Started out silver and multi-piece with splendid enamel and ended up aluminum and two pieces when you were lucky (and painted when you weren't:thumbsdown).
Just a thought. Phillip

Re: Hungarian Security
I don't throw the word "rare" around much, but this is quite rare. It's a small stick-pin type, two piece badge for membership in the Bástya S. E. (Bástya Sport Egyesület - Bastion Sport Association)-the sport club of the AVO (Border Guard) / AVH (Security Police) during the Rakosi era (1949-1956). In 1956, the Dozsa (Doge... more or less synonymous with "bastion") became it's successor as the sport club throughout the Internal Ministry (I have a couple of those pins in transit- they have a much more familiar look).
The workmanship is superb on this badge, which is only a little taller than a US nickle. The term "exquisite" comes to mind. Note the usage of the AVH/AVO cap badge emblem.

Re: Hungarian Security
That truly is a fine badge. If only all the badges and awards of the soviet block had that much workmanship to them.... You certainly feel prouder when someone has really taken the time designing and crafting something for you to proudly wear rather than just being thrown something that has had no effort spent on it.

Re: Hungarian Security
I agree with both of you. This is an excellently crafted badge.:thumbsup In fact, if I didn't have to go to sleep now, I would start my bit about decreasing craftsmanship as time went by across the entire spectrum of the Soviet/Communist world and how it even found its way into the KGB. But that's for later and another thread.;)

Re: Hungarian Security
A couple of late Border Guard badges from the Kadar period. First, a Border Guard Patrol Leader badge... heavy construction in spite of the plastic star. Opposing prong back.

Re: Hungarian Security
I believe this is a Border Guard Duty badge... all it says is Border Guard. Heavy, thick brass with a centrally located pin back.

Re: Hungarian Security
In post #33 I said I'd have something in the way of Internal Ministry Sports Club insignia that looked more familiar, and here they are...
When the Sports Club changed from Bastya to Dozsa, it also went from a purely AVH and AVO membership to a membership for all members of the Internal Ministry. There were still medals to be used with the Bastya logo on them; until these ran out, the Bastya name was ground down and the Dozsa name was engraved there (over the old logo)... I don't have an example of this, but they are "out there". Dozsa then got a new logo... or at least new to them. Wonder where the idea came from? Anyway, here are a couple of general membership stick pins; one from Ujpest and the other from Debrecen. At least the violet colour is new (I think).

Re: Hungarian Security
When I first saw them, I thought Dynamo - of course. Then the explanation and I thought, were they obliged to come up with a name that started with a 'D' so they could use the logo letter and rhomb badge design? It made me reach over to the drawer labeled "Dynamo" and pull out the Romanian badges to see which name they used - just in case I had put them in the wrong drawer - I didn't.
Nice badges, regardless.:thumbsup Phillip

Re: Hungarian Security
This is very rare- I have no idea why it was offered to me. Pure luck, I guess. It's an early Rakosi period AVH document promoting Istvan Dercze to First Lieutenant, dated the 1st of January 1950. Of note is Lt. General Gabor Peter's signature, which is by hand. I'll begin with the whole document, then the raised AVH seal and recipient's name (upper left corner) and go on to the "body copy"...
