Re: looking for a soviet/cossack sabre
In the beginning of 1931 due to shortage of non-ferrous metals in USSR Zlatoust’s arms factory experimented with several possible substitutions for brass parts of M1927. In 1931 and 1932 they were trying to use soft iron, ductile cast iron and some other metals. For protection from corrosion they were trying to cover those parts with brass, zinc, bluing, nickel and chrome. Bellow is 1932 example of such experiments. In the end STO approved model with surrogate armature made from ductile cast iron and nickel’s protective cover. They were manufactured along with regular M1927 until 1938.
Due to less corrosion resistance some, but not all of them, were put to the less sever service’s conditions than army’s, which led some people (Kulinsky in particular) to believe that they were designed and manufactured specifically for NKVD. While in fact they were designed, manufactured and used in the Red Army with occasional use in other organizations. Last edited by vvadim; 05-22-2010 at 02:50 PM. |

Re: looking for a soviet/cossack sabre
Thank you again Vvadim for your explanations.
Here is a couple of mine, I wonder if anyone can explain why one has been "de-communistified", ie the embellishment (star/sickle etc) has been thoroughly sanded/ground away. Also the scabbard has had the fittings for the bajonet cut off and ground even with the plated fittings..

Hello,
what do you think about this soviet/cossack sabre. Looks like a 1938 produced piece. Is it original? best regards and thanks Andreas |

Alfred,
In my opinion :thumbsdown Too many anomalies, for example it looks like the ZIZ and year are hand-engraved on the blade. Best regards,

Re: looking for a soviet/cossack sabre
I think that it is original, every thing is ok :thumbsup, the stamp can be differently marked even in the same year.
I`ve 2 ZIK 1942 from the same wermacht cossack batallion, founded after war in he same little village, but the stamp are looking different. |

You have to be so careful buying anything from the Soviet era.Henry Krank sell reproduction versions which includes the Tokarov bayonet for about £160.
I've recently bought a model Russian 1891 Dragoons sabre and was wondering if anyone can supply pictures of them and also tell me how long the version was manufactured. The version I have has a brass handle but the patina has been ruined by someone cleaning and polishing it.What markings should I be looking for.
