KGB "gramotas"
This is the first of several KGB-related award documents ("gramotas" and "diplom"). These are from the main branch of the KGB as far as I can tell as opposed to their Border Guard counterparts ( http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...-gramotas.html).
This first one may help sort out the enigmatic table medal I recently acquired that was a tribute to the 40th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet Union in the GPW and has a standard KGB sword and shield emblem on one of the sides. The "Gramota" is for a KGB lieutenant-engineer on the 30th anniversary of the victory in 1975. Just in case anyone would like to know what is written, the text is roughly as follows: Anniversary Diploma Lieutenant-engineer Yuri Fyodorovich Ilyushin. For the successes achieved in the work, impeccable service in the KGB of the USSR Council of Ministers and the 30th anniversary of Victory in Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, you are rewarded with [this] diploma. We express confidence that you will continue to serve as an example of the faithful execution of one's patriotic duty to our great Motherland - the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Head of the KGB of the CM USSR in the Gorky region Colonel Danilov (Signature) The first is of the Order pictured on the cover (the only thing there), the second is the inner left side and finally, the inner right. [My experiment in shrinking picture files failed because they could not be copied once they were re-sized. So my apologies Art for this post. I will try another approach for the subsequent documents I plan to post in this thread.] Phillip

Re: KGB "gramotas"
Here are the scans of the unusual table medal that I referred to in the previous post for reference - also pictured in http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...lace-them.html.
My scanner is not the best with 3-D objects, so for better photos see above thread.:) Phillip

Re: KGB "gramotas"
Phillip,
I do not see the connection here  On the diploma, the Order of Victory is depicted, whereas on your medal, it is the Order of the Patriotic War. Marc |

Re: KGB "gramotas"
The pics are fine, good even. :) Thanks for the translation on the document; we non-Russian speakers appreciate even the 'boiler plate' being explicitly translated.
The naming gyrations of the Cheka --> KGB notwithstanding, there may simply be no significance to the lack of name on the table medal, with the symbol saying all that needs to be said.

Re: KGB "gramotas"
Here's a "Diplom" for first place in a KGB "personal weapon" shooting competition. I find it rather interesting because of the nature of this "sport" in relation to their duties.
I am a bit puzzled about the name of the winner. In Russian it is typed as "Илюшина Юрия Федоровича" (without a comma) which comes out to "Ilyushina Yuri Fedorovich." The familial or surname and patronymic end in an "a" as well as the title for "comrade" which means, from my memory and understanding that this is a woman named Yuri. There is also a stamp over the Council Chairman's signature at the bottom but it has faded so badly that it is just about impossible to read, but there is enough to see that it is from the Central (or perhaps City) Council of Physical Education and Sports. Exactly what city this took place in is not in the text of the document. The text in English: Central Soviet [Council] of Physical Education and Sports Diploma [Typed text:] The City Soviet [Council] of Physical Culture [Education] and Sports awards Comrade Ilyushina[,] Yuri Fedorovich, who took first place with a score of 73 points in the competitions for shooting personal weapons on the 57th anniversary of the Cheka - KGB. Chairman of the Board: Vasyagin (signature) 20 December 1974 Council Chairman (signature) What I find interesting about this one is not just that it may have been a woman who won the shooting competition at a time (when women and Jews were simply no longer hired by the KGB per "company" policy. Moreover, it took place on the Dec. 20 anniversary of the KGB (and its predecessors), and KGB officers/employees received their paychecks on the 20th of every month as a "remembrance" of their beginning. Phillip P.S. Art, I managed to find a progarm that compresses the photo/scan files, so it should all be good from now on.:D

Re: KGB "gramotas"
Phillip,
Seems that you forgot about the Accusative case... :D The diploma was definitely awarded to a man named Yuri Fedorovich Ilyushin. Marc |

Re: KGB "gramotas"
Technically, this is a VLKSM award on the 61st anniversary of the KGB Border Guard from the "regional Komsomol" for a Sgt. Sologub (it seems badges were made and awarded for every tenth anniversary of the KGB apparatus, but paper was popular on other anniversaries;)). Since I'm not quite as familiar with the history of the border guard as I am the main security branch of the KGB, I have to wonder if the month of May is to the BG what the month of December (and the 20th of each month as payday) is to the Chekists...
I also think the stamp center is kinda cool - hopefully it can be seen here. Text: Gramota Bagrationovsky* Komsomol Regional Committee Awards Sergeant Nikola Antonovich Sologub for excellence in education and training of worthy** defenders of the sacred borders of the motherland and in connection with the 61st anniversary of the Border Troops of the KGB of the USSR. Secretary Regional Committee of the VLKSM [signature] (Yu. Kulik) 28 May 1979 *Can anyone help me out with "Bagration" in this context? Besides the Russian Prince and General, how is this nominative? form used and what is the closest word in English? **For lack of a better word. Phillip
