Medaldude,

I think the badge may still be genuine. Original enamel on brass variations often becomes very dark, and it could leave pale red traces on the brass where it had fallen off. What worries me is that there should be "sun rays" on the banner under the enamel. I agree with Shawn, it's hard to tell.

Tal,

I've seen them before, I believe I've even posted one earlier with the explanation. I think it's a fake.

There is another one offered for sale, that I think is at least suspicious.

KGB 70th fake?

Hi
I´ll been collecting for a while now and I saw this badge on ebay.
KGB is faked as hell but this doesn´t look like the rest.
I think it´s ukrainian. Could it be genuine? It´s not in any reference material.
Best wishes

I can't make out the left side of the badge, but the right side reads the city name "Dnepropetrovsk" located in Ukraine.

Sovvisor,

Unfortunately I can't make out the letters around the edges. Could you perhaps PM a larger resolution one?

I have seen several of this style of cheap aluminuim bages that are genuine - to either local KGB offices or KGB military units and authorized only by the local commander.

On the other hand, as you say KGB stuff is faked all the time and a cheaply made adge would likely sell enough to be worth it.

(How's that for non-committal!)

Sovvisor,

It could be a local Ukrainian badge, but I can't figure what it says either.

Hi guys,
What do you make of this?
Some kind of heavy metal, bought it in 1994 in Kishinev. Leningrad mint nut, but no mint mark

Shiv,

These are another type of current fakes. The flat back and hex-nut are tell-tale signs and the front looks good from a distance but does not compare when seen with an original.

While the flat back and nut gives it away there are a few clues from the front alone. The gold star is not a separate piece - it is on the originals. The ribbon bar, on the ones I have seen, seems to be covered in a sort of glaze, it i somehow convex in fact. On the originals there is no glaze over the enamel and the enamel is mat and flat. You can actual feel the metal letters if you feel really carefully.

Shawn
