Re: "Cosmonauts wings"
If someone could post the original Russian name of this item and the name of the institution that founded it I think that'd be of greater help to us all.

Re: "Cosmonauts wings"
Guys,
Let's get back to Earth for a second, please. As of June 20, 2011, a grand total of 523 people from 38 countries have reached 100 km (62 mi, the FIA-defined boundary of space) or more in altitude, of which 520 reached low Earth orbit or beyond. Almost all of these people came from the USSR/Russia (147) or the USA (349). The USA awards the Astronaut badge (nicknamed "Astronaut Wings", of which there are different version depending on the person's status) to all military and civilian who have completed training and performed a successful spaceflight (e.g. flown to an altitude of 50mi/80km or higher, US definition of space). The USSR awarded the title of Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR to all of their cosmonauts that completed at least one space flight. The practice has been continued by the Russian Federation which awards the title of Pilot-Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation. . So, as Ed pointed out previously, how come so many of them are available if, at this stage: . a bit more than 150 Soviet/Russian citizens have flown in space over the past 50 years; . upon completion of a space flight, a cosmonaut receives the title of Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR / Russian Federation, an extremely prestigious award made of 23K gold and enamels; . usually they tend to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union / Russian Federation; . there is NO MENTION WHATSOEVER of the so-called cosmonaut wings in government documents. Anyone is, of course, totally free to believe in whatever fairytale he/she wants. Personally, I have made up my mind about these a long time ago. Marc |

I'm a little confused by your comments, after you urged us all back to earth , because you seem to be mixing two different awards in your "bullet points". In your 2nd point to you appear to be referring to the Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR Award (Medal, Badge, etc), which is indeed made of gold and enamel. In all the research I've done I've never seen this award officially referred to as either a medal or a badge, only as a title of distinction, when there is obviously a medal representing this title. Curious.... On the other hand, the "Badge Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR" (So called "Cosmonaut Wings") is clearly identified as a "Badge". Then, in your 4th point, you contend, "there is NO MENTION WHATSOEVER of the so-called cosmonaut wings in government documents." Well, technically, you are quite correct, in one sense. The Russians never referred to these badges as, "wings" but always as a "badge" or "breast badge". Nevertheless, the Знак Летчик-Космонавт СССР (Badge Pilot-Cosmonaut USSR) was instituted on 24 April 1961 by Ministry of Defense (MoD) Order No 85 and the number on the shield of the badge denoted the number of space flights undertaken by the wearer. Then, on 21 February 1963, MoD Order No 45 changed the criteria for the award of this badge, i.e., The C in C of the Air Force could award the 1st Class badge while the 2nd & 3rd Class badges were to be awarded by the USSR Minister of Defense. On 18 June 1963 MoD Order No 161 tightened up the award criteria for the Badge Pilot-Cosmonaut USSR, i.e., 2nd Class was to be awarded for 3 space flights and 1st Class for 5 space flights. Quite clearly, these are indeed, "government documents". Moreover, on 15 April 1961, [I]Pravda[I]reported on its front page a decree by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR establishing the [B]rank[B] [B]of "Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR". Then, less than a month later, on 12 May 1961 [I]Pravada announced, again on page 1, a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR approving the [I]Regulations[I] on the rank and description of the badge "Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR". The Badge Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR was made of gold plated brass and enamel with a pin back. Are you saying that you don't believe that the badge "Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR" is a geuine, authorized award, when there is plenty of photographic evidence to the contrary? Or....are you saying that you don't believe wearing copies of both the medal and the badge were ever produced, or, indeed, worn. What "fairy tale" are you referring to? Regards, Jim |

Re: "Cosmonauts wings"
This fellow Shatalov is proudly wearing a "1" class (it seems at least) cosmonaut wing.
