Hi all my friends. I have bought some papers on ebay and I would need some help with translation. There are 2 documents for SMERSH and 2 for NKVD of which one is addressed to Berija.
All help is much appreciated. Please put your reply under the document you are referring to. Best

I would reather say that "Primorskiy Kray" means "region by the sea" (Yes, I know this is tha name of administratinal region in USSR/Russia), but can be mistaken of course.

Whie primorskiy does mean by the sea, when you see Primorskiy Krai in print like that it always refers to the specific region in Russia and is not translated any more than you would change England to "Land of the Angles" or Novgorod to "New Town".

I understand and am not for translating geographical names (especially that some of them are barely translatable), but this is just a small remark to what Charlet said:
"krai of Primorsk (?)." what would suggest it is the region near the city of Primorsk (like e.g. "krasnoiarskiy krai") while, as far as I know, it isn't. I don't say it's a mistake, but just want to make it more clear if neccessary. |

You are right that it is not by the city of the same name. Primorskiy Krai is an independent Krai on the Soviet East Coast not far from Vladivostok (IIRC).
While these docs look ok beware of Primorskiy Krai docs as that is one of the fake stamps being used. Shawn |
