Nice pic, Mark. I'm afraid this is the best we can do... without handling the Order.

Re: Monty's Order of Victory : screwback or pin-back version ?
Guys,
Monty's Soviet orders were regular screwback issues that were later made into pinbacks. Here are some new pics of both the OoV and OS1. Marc |

Re: Monty's Order of Victory : screwback or pin-back version ?
And the details of his Order of Suvorov 1st class #133. Sorry about the quality, but that's all I could come up with.
Now, looking at it, and at the visible details from the OoV, I suggest that the later was altered in the same way; unfortunately, I don't have anything to show in support of my position :( Marc |

Christophe,
That may be so as not to have the pin under tension for many years. Marc |

Re: Monty's Order of Victory : screwback or pin-back version ?
Can you imagine the jeweler being handed the OoV and saying "you want me to do WHAT? Wouldn't it be easier to punch a hole in your tunic?" On the other hand, Monty may have used some royal jeweler responsible for work on the crown jewels to whom this was just another hunk of precious metals and stones.

Re: Monty's Order of Victory : screwback or pin-back version ?
As Eisenhower's Victory was screw-back, I see no reason to expect that Montgomery's was not also issued in the same (normal) fashion.
Moreover, I have never seen or heard of an order book with any details of the manufacture of the award. What leads you to expect that? Awards were made the way they were made and were awarded in that fashion. If regulations later changed (for example, the mass shift to ribboned awards, for example), the recipients were left on their own to adapt their decorations. If foreign recipients wished to mangle them (and many did), that was up to them. Has anyone ever seen a photo of Montgomery (or. for that matter, Eisenhower) wearing the award? And I mean wearing it for real, not at the bestowal cenemony. |

Re: Monty's Order of Victory : screwback or pin-back version ?
Hi Ed,
The one I posted in post #7 has been taken in the Kremlin on 10 January 1947. The bestowal ceremony of Montgomery took place on 12 June 1945. Cheers. Ch; |

Yes. But are there any later photos of him wearing it?
The only photos I have seen of Eisenhower's bestowal show him being handed a box. |
