Dave, where did you get your frames? Or do thay carry a brand name of some sort?
I like the idea of the thick foam backing, and the extra large size.
I've got a big collection of Imperial items that need a good home.

Spring project

LATINMAJORAC,
Try using the Instant shadow boxes available at Michael's and other major chain craft stores. This would give you a great display and get your feet wet. You can move on from there. If you don't like the standard black background that comes with the Instant Shadow boxes, buy some felt in the color you like. I keep red and yellow felt on hand for use in backgrounds. Most of all...Don't give up!!! The work and end result will more than make up for early set backs.

All the Best,
Doc

Hi Eric,

Hopefully Dave won't mind that I respond to your question.

These awesome frames are made by Indian River Display Case.

Their website lists all the various types of cases they offer, including their wood display cases.

On Dave's suggestion and advice, I started buying from Indian River several years ago. They seem to be a great group to deal with and I still buy my cases from them today! We've mentioned them before in other threads, but I know there are several members of the forum who would agree that these cases are top-notch.

Just wanted to get the info up . . . Thanks

- Sean

P.S. Eric, your Leningrad display looks excellent. I think the stamps really set it apart!

No to belabor the point, but the instant shadowboxes are great in that they are easy (use photo corners for docs and velco for medals) and cheap (assuming you buy when the sale is on, which is often). The Indian River cases are excellent, but you can get 3 cheaper ones from Michaels for the price of one from IR. If I had a group worth more than $300 I might go with the IR cases, but for lower-end collectors like me, the cheap instant shadow boxes are the right tool at the right price.

Nice!! I love the stamps!

Not really an award, but something I did a couple years ago just to liven up the house.

Collection

i finally got my camera back so i am proud to present my display case and medals!

the fisplaycase i made from 1x4's (the bottom box) and 4 inch moulding (the lift off top). the background is black foam core and the medals are hung by three 'T' head pins. the box is stained and finished. the lines you may or may not see in the pictures are the grid that i use to hang the medals, it is a permanent part of the box.

i would have used a ready made shadow box but i like creating things so meh, i had the time. there is no glass/plexiglass in the lid because i thought i would combine two schools of thought (the one that says medals should be open air, and the one that says they should be covered or displayed in a frame).

anywho, the collection is not much to look at, mostly simple medals, however i think it is a nice size for a beginning collector. any thoughts or comments would be appreciated! specifically, i am looking for suggestions on wether or not to buy more smaller, less expensive medals (and thereby more of them) or save for a larger nicer addition to the collection?

thanks to everyone who helped with this little project i undertook, you guys know who you are!

oh, and sorry for the quality of the pictures, a photographer i am not!

hi

really can´t help you out there. It´s totally up to you if you want a big collection or a high standard collection. My advice for now is a WWII group with doc. You can get a rather good one for arounnd 100-150 USD
best

Dam nice!!

It looks great.
My budget's pretty low so I go after the less expensive medals (except for that one time I got a wild hair and bought a Nevsky).
Or, how 'bout stashing away 10 bucks a week for a while. By christmas time you'd have a nice little hoard and I bet Alexei would have something really special.
BTW, if you wanna email me those images of your beautiful display I might be able to make them bigger (in Photoshop) so we can all see what you got there.
Also, what are "T head pins"? I might be able to use them.
