Re: Laminated Documents - any ideas ?
Lamination do nothing with document, except preventing it's further damages.
Laminated doc also could be checked for originality without any problems. Don't see any reasons for regrets. |

Re: Laminated Documents - any ideas ?
Actually according to the paper preservationists I talked to most of the pouches used in lamination are really bad for the documents they contain. Obviously it depends on the quality and type of pouch that is used. as to how bad they are.
These sites discuss some of the issues with cellulose acetate lamination (less commonly used these days) and other types of lamination Guidelines for the Care of Works on Paper with Cellulose Acetate Lamination Preservation Basics The newer polyester ones are less of a problem but can still aggravate existing problems inherent in documents (e.g. acid papers) and you still can't release the document. Hello,
thank you very much for your opinions. I have bought them, because they are indeed very well preserved from further damaging, etc. I just asked, because I MAY be willing to take them out of their sheets for some reason one day. So I just wanted to know, if it theoretically would be possible. I just found out that it IS possible to remove the plastic sheets by using a hot iron. I laminated a simple sheet of paper, made it hot by using the iron and then carefully removed the sheet. The paper was not damaged at all; but it is a hell of work and it has to be done VERY carefully and slow. (Just if anyone has the same problem) Thank you, Jens* Last edited by CtahhR; 03-13-2012 at 05:49 AM. |

Enamel Restoration
Gentlemen,
I do not know if this particular subject has been previously discussed here. I attempted a search, but came up with nothing. In any case, I own this very rare cockarde in relic condition. It seems that one of the previous owners began restoration, but only got as far as the separate center roundel. Until I find a better example - which I doubt will ever happen - I would like to complete the uncompleted process by restoring the enamel on the star. Who does this sort of work nowadays? Regards, Richie |

Preventing/removing "verdigris"
I don't know if this is in fact true verdigris, and I know how most people are about cleaning anything, but I am trying to see if I can prevent or at least stop the slow progression of this. Whatever it is called, it seems to occur most frequently on the text surrounded by enamel and usually on badges as below making the text appear "fuzzy." It is perhaps the most annoying and frustrating aspect of aging to me. Photos taken only about 8 months apart. Any ideas on what to do regarding prevention and/or removal would be sincerely appreciated. [Please, any lectures or pontificating on the pros and cons of "cleaning" awards are best left to other threads.]

Re: Enamel Restoration
Richie,
I think that cockade you want to restore will look great - it already does. Also off topic: now I'm not trying to give you a hard time or be petty about grammar, but forgetting an occasional 's' made for an absolutely hilarious image as I read about the "German explosive[s] engineers" going 'POP' and 'BOOM' if agitated. I'll keep smiling for some time to come tonight - thanks. Phillip
