Re: Anyone with a Soviet Military Encyclopedia?
That's great, thanks very much Alex! :thumbsup The podvignaroda site will be great once it's finished. Thanks for the suggestion of searching by name + patronymic, I guess I am lucky my relative had an unsual patronymic! Btw, this man was one of the 300+ Khmelnitsky 1 Class cavaliers. :)

Re: Anyone with a Soviet Military Encyclopedia?
There are bits and pieces of data on the Russian Internet, but I was unable to find a complete bio. He would be a great candidate for research.

Re: Anyone with a Soviet Military Encyclopedia?
Thanks very much, Alexei. Yup I've also found some interesting bits here and there, in addition to the GPW-1 citation Alex found on podvignaroda.ru there's a spravka signed by Brejdo from 24.6.1941(!) there.
One interesting tool for researching biographies today is the Google Books site. Check out анатолий ерухимович брейдо - Google Book Search as well as Кременчуг брейдо - Google Book Search --some really interesting results. I've bought the Znamenitiye Yevreii book to surprise my father, he'll be very happy to read about his uncle whom he remembers so fondly. George Last edited by Pobeda45; 12-19-2010 at 11:28 PM. |

Pencil Note..
Hi gents,
Here's an unfortunate but not uncommon pencil note in the margins of a list of men to be awarded, here from July 31 1942. This is a list from the Western Front, 49th Army, men recommended for the Red Star. I am researching #8, gun loader Sumskoy Petr Zaharovich. Pencil note next to #10, Lt. Fetisov Grigori Klimovich, Platoon Commander in 51 Rifle Guards Regiment / 18 Guards Division, says "Killed 12.7.42" P.S. My researched person, Petr Sumskoy, was downgraded to a CSM here. Not to worry, he was thrice decorated later in the war--all the way up to a Red Banner. Pretty good for a Sergeant.. George |

Re: Pencil Note..
Pretty cool, aside from the KIA part. Can you tell us more about this document?

Re: Pencil Note..
Thanks Eric, here's the front page of this Prikaz/Order:
It's basically a list of men approved by the Presidium for awards. :thumbsup George |

Re: Pencil Note..
Correct me if I'm wrong but this document is from as high as it gets when it comes to awarding Soviet awards, from the Kremlin itself, right? Is this not an very rare and seldom seen sort of thing? Or am I on the wrong track here.

Re: Pencil Note..
Eric, I think every award was included in a list from "above", at least in the beginning of the war. It was just a formality of course. Lists of men were sent in packets to Kalinin and I am sure he summarily approved them. The "commanding staff" lists were sent from Rumyantsev (Deputy People's Commisar of Defense) to Stalin. The Presidium then generated lists of men to be awarded.
I may be missing a step or two from the award process--here's how I know it so far: 1. Award Citation/Recommendation (reviewed up the chain, upgrades/downgrades happened here) 2. List sent by Army Formation (for example, Front) to the reviewing body 3. Prikaz created by the Presidum, with a list of names, authorizing the awards 4. Ukaz created by the Presidium, with a list of names, ordering the decorations to be awarded Forgive me for any inaccuracies. :thumbsup George |
