Two quick comments.
1) In Moscow I once picked up a WWII era Distinguished NKVD award badge in a genuine HSU presentation box - small red box with the red velvet covered cardboard insert. A hole had been made in the insert for the screwpost. I am not sure if it was the original issue box.... 2 It is odd that the other East European countried were so much better at boxes - Czech, Polish and best I have ever seeen - Yugoslav!! Shawn |

Strange
Indeed, Eastern European communist countries had excellent boxes.
Maybe the intention of the USSR was that an award shoul be worn, and nice box will be at home. However, we saw some great exeptions. Tal

Tal, or ayone else,
I am curious as to how people display awards with boxes. I is not a problem with the few Soviet ones I have but all of my small collection of Bulgarian awards are cased as are half my Yugo and 1/3 of my Polish. I never know what to do with them. Just closed cases don't look too nice. I keep mine in glass fronted drawers so the boxes can't stand open since the drawer is not tall enough. Usually I lay the medal/order on the closed box but that starts to take up a lot of room. Shawn |

Shawn,
One of my customers uses three large glass curios to display his collection. This of course doesn't exactly save the space :) Alexei |

This Order of Friendship among Nations was supposedly presented to a Bulgarian official. Looks like the usual leatherette box, but with a velvet interior.
Some boxes illustrated earlier have cardboard inserts pasted to the back end of the box, implying that the box could also be upgraded with the addition of the velvet "roof" and the velvet "pillow board". Last edited by ibaya; 10-22-2002 at 11:43 PM. |

Ibaya,
I love the FN, but I am even more impressed with the cased Lenin Medal. I have only seen this box once, because the medal was awarded to a relative of mine, but I have never seen it for sale. Wow! Alexei |

Yes, the box is quite underwhelming ... made of that miracle petrochemical product, plastic! :) But then again, how many orders, medals and badges were distributed in specifically-molded boxes, as opposed to the generic leatherettes, stock cardboard cartons, or vacuum sealed pouches?
And it only goes to show, one person's seen-gazillions-of-those could be another's first sighting! Last edited by ibaya; 10-23-2002 at 07:24 PM. |
