No, not a fantasy. I have this badge, too, but with a different screwplate. Some sort of Aeroflot academy or school, I suppose.

Would the first badge be one of a Tank Academy?

I believe the second badge is :
Popov School of Naval Radio-Electronics (radar and sonar). Am I correct?

Yes, you are right. The shield on the first one reads "Akademia BTV". BTV must be an acronym for BroneTankovihVoisk (Armored Tank Forces). On the second badge, I can see an inscription "imeni Popova".

Hello all, I'm new to this board. I'm a 'long time' collector of the East German Border Guard. I recently added a General's uniform to my collection. It has a tailored hole in the tunic for a Soviet General Staff Academy Badge. I'm out of my element in Soviet badges, but from doing my research here it appears fakes abound. I'm searching for a Voroshilov General Staff Academy badge from the 1960s or 1970s. I would welcome any and all advice on not making a mistake. Thank you.

Jeff,

General Staff Academy badges had a gold frame around the enamel. Originals are not very common, but fakes, as you rightly pointed out, tend to be available ;)

Hi Jeff, welcome to our little corner of the web :)

The best way would be to buy from a reputable dealer, many frequent the forum here. A post in the looking for section in the for sale part of the forum might bring results.
Maybe watch out for any on our fav auction site but I would recommend that you aquire as many good images as you can and post them here in the forum for the experts scrutiny.
