Re: Mongollian Tragedy
To me this looks like a screwpost/rivet repair gone bad. This was often done by veterans themselves.

Re: Order of Polar Star, 1940 type, #183, early 1940s issue
Thanks, Brendan.
Just to give some context to this post, these are the major varieties of the Order of the Polar Star (though Order of the Golden Pole might be a better English translation). The serial number ranges on this one are pretty chaotic, though efforts are presently underway to sort these out by reference to the archives. I'm planning a JOMSA article on this order. Type 1 ca. 1936-39 - observed range 316-909, est. 300 awarded with many specimens escaped from the bank Type 2 ca. 1940-41 - observed range 8-2878 (four sub-varieties) Type 3 ca. 1941-70 - observed range 2-15000 (three sub-varieties) Type 4 ca. 1970-2003 - observed range 15015-30426 Type 5 since 2003 - observed range 31650-39785 (but still being awarded) - it seems to be the only order actually to be awarded in this ugly brass form Last edited by medals73; 12-05-2009 at 04:21 PM. |

And, in case anyone is interested, the two ribbon bars for the Polar Star, 1944-61 and 1961--.

Re: Order of the Polar Star
Yes, brass, It seems to be the only one of the solid brass (and very very ugly) generation of Mongolian awards actually to be issued. The others seem to be escapees from a produced but as yet unawarded stock for future needs. Some day, all those other nasty brassy awards (except Sukhbaatar) will be awarded.

Re: Order of the Polar Star
Glad to, when I have scans at hand. Otherwise, I'll need to fetch my babies home to scan. They are overdue for "home leave".
I've been working on a JOMSA article on these, but sorting out the serial numbers is completely impossible. Polar Star numbers are absolute chaos. Type 1 (I'm using shorthand here, the actual tentative breakdown is much more complex.) |

Re: Order of the Polar Star
Type 2
With Mongol bichig (not any of the other ways you see it described!) legend. Note the number. This type has four varieties. |
