Wierd - looks like it got in a bar fight with a mint punch tool and lost.

A couple of experts have suggested that probably at some point there was a pin attached to it. The catch was where two holes used to be, and the pin's attachment hinge was on the other side. I guess this is the only possible explanation. What still puzzles me is that the screwpost has no evidence of ever been messed with.

For Service of the Motherland 1st Class
Several years back, I was able to purchase an Orger of the Motherland 1st Class. I had this piece authenticated by Paul McDaniels, and it has the early-form "ridges" to the rays when viewed in the reverse. I have tried to have it researched, but have been unsuccessful to date. Does anyone have information on researching these types of pieces? The engraved serial number is #09, which Art has in his military awards image & description database for this award. Any comments on finding history on this piece would be appreciated.
Regards, Geokeith |

Genuine piece, no doubt about that. Also an interesting variation with faint rays on the back of the bottom star point.
I am doing some research on the Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces 3rd Class mirror reverse variation. So far I have observed the following pieces: 1113-1155 (1916 has plain reverse), 2037-2618 (2684 has plain reverse), as well as numbers 2733 (number 2478 has plain reverse), 3341, (number 3624 has plain reverse), 4399 and 4417 (number 4953 has plain reverse), 4994, 5388 (5706 has plain reverse), 5748, 54XXX (!!!) The other variation I am interested in is a partial mirrow image reverse with the lines present only on the bottom ray of the rayed star. So far I have seen: 10621, 13530 (weak image), 19137, 22380, 26724 and 27015. Would love to know what you have/have seen and would appreciate detailed pictures either here or by e-mail. Alexei |
