Re: Fake Academy Badges

It´s a school badge from the MBD. Looks real to me. It ´s not a rare item.

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Jens, I'd need to see the back (close-up) before I could say for sure. It looks good, but their should be an LMD circular/oval mint mark on the reverse - kind of hard see.;)
Phillip

I found the seller of that badge. I've bought from him before and had no problems. It's a good price, but I'd still get him to email you a picture of the reverse (especially the mint mark).

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Jens,

Your badge represents one of the last "Soviet" academy badges; it is actually listed in Avers 2 as being produced in '91 (last year for Soviet). It may not have a maker's mark on the back- many of the last badges didn't. While I don't completely discount that it could be faked, it isn't a rare item nor is it made of precious metal. Couple that with the fact that there were so many left unissued (NOS- new old stock- like most Bulgarian medals you see for sale) and, hence, available for sale, one wonders why anyone would bother to fake it.

It is, none the less, an attractive badge and yes, I have one in the collection as well.

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Greg,

Following your logic, why do they fake the 50 Years of the Revolution medal then?

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Marc,

Maybe the operative word here is "logic"... this particular piece is struck from brass with two dies (one top, one bottom)... pretty big set-up for so little money. They aren't on the auction site that often so, unless they are being sold like hotcakes somewhere else, it just doesn't seem like anyone is getting a return on their investment. However, I do realize that logic (or, at least, logic from my standpoint) doesn't always apply, so I do see your point, and I did say that I didn't completely discount the possibility that it could be faked.

Also, Phil is correct with the LMD mint mark... as you're looking at the reverse side of the badge, the mark should be at the right hand "point" just above the banner end.

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Thank you guys !

The badge was between the pieces of a smaller collection I have bought recently; the owner died one year ago and collected everything connected to the former "eastern block" states; so he was not a specialist and I never had seen such a piece before...

I expected the piece to be a fake at first, because of it`s excellent condition and missing wearing traces.

Jens, I spoke too soon about it being for sale (obviously :o); the blue background looked similar to another one I saw going for $19.99 - which is a reasonable price. It's a nice piece to have if you are collecting MVD items (which is why I have 2 ;)) but as it has been pointed out above, they are fairly scarce on the common market, yet not very expensive - from most people. The "modern" version (at least in the early 1990s) just changed the Soviet seal (and the 'CCCP') to the RF eagle and the rest of the badge stayed the same.

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Here's a new one on me. I don't aggressively look for these badges, but I've seen quite a few and have a couple around somewhere. What makes this on different from what I've seen before is the circular MMD mark on the reverse. Anybody ever see one like this? Is it post-1991 production? It would not surprise me if it were a fake since we've established that counterfeiters are sometimes using good replicas of mint marks. If it is a copy, I don't think the seller knows it because he doesn't want much money for it.

Thanks in advance to anyone with an opinion.

Phillip

Sorry about the photo quality. I have no control in this matter.

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Phillip,

Looks genuine to me. Back when I was a dealer I used to get tons of them, all still in factory boxes. I believe they are late Soviet issue.

Re: Fake Academy Badges

Circular MMD mintmark is legitimate. I don't know when it started, but yes it is comparatively late.
