Re: Fake Preservation of Public Order Medals

Ruiz,

Better pictures never hurt... ;)
Do you have confirmation of the exact weight without the ring?

Re: Fake Preservation of Public Order Medals

Ruiz,

Now, that is more like it. It looked unusual for a silver (21g) medal, but as a silver-plated one, it is :thumbsup

Re: Fake Preservation of Public Order Medals

I think if you're serious about spending $$$ on a medal, you need pictures where the medallion takes up more than 5% of the image.

If this is all the seller will give you walk away. All anyone could say it that it looks like a preservation of public order medal but that's all I'm afraid.

Re: Fake Preservation of Public Order Medals

Unfortunately not, cropping the original image makes it too pixelated and out of focues. The seller needs to provide close ups of both sides, in focus and well lit. Also weights and measurements would be a helpful starting point.

Buying with anything less would be like buying a house after just looking at it on google maps really.

Re: Fake Preservation of Public Order Medals

Unfortunately, these are one of the most counterfeited medals and the fakes often look very convincing.

As Tommy pointed out, in order to determine authenticity with any degree of accuracy, high resolution images of medals is even more important in most cases than orders because the "little things" that counterfeiters overlook or count on buyers missing are very subtle.

When it comes to Public Order medals, if I do not know and/or trust the seller, I will not buy one. The current high quality of fakes is such that many of the details required to determining the authenticity such as weight and measurements and the metal composition (solid silver, silver-plated nickel, "German silver") become too important and I don't know about you, but I have been lied to by some sellers in the past as to such things - imagine that!

Fortunately, eBay now takes into consideration being sold a counterfeit item as authentic and allows for refunds. However, this process is far from perfect and allegedly time consuming (according to what I've heard since I don't use eBay directly for items over $10 without knowing the seller personally - see first sentence of previous paragraph).

I apologize for the long-winded response which has turned out to be a general warning about how to do business with sellers - especially those that will not or claim they cannot supply quality photos or weights and measures for any reason: e.g., "selling for a friend" and don't have access to the item, "I can only take photos [of this appalling quality] because my camera is so old," and of course the "I don't have a scale or calipers" (or my favorite variation of this excuse: "I don't want to break the unbroken connection on the ring because that would reduce the value if you don't buy it":nono).

The simple truism is that if someone has nothing to hide, then they don't try to hide anything.

If you are not even being offered better photos (much less the other things I mentioned), then I suggest you take Tommy's advice and "walk away."

Phillip
