Here is a rough biography from:

Born January 25 1951 in Kazakstan. Russian. Member of the CPSU from 1978. In the law-enforcement bodies of USSR from 1968. Fire fighting started under the immediate superior Major Telyatnikov LP who was at the forefront of the action. By the decree of the Presidium of Supreme Soviet of USSR of September 25 1986 for courage, heroism and self-denying actions displayed at liquidation of break-down of the Chernobyl NPS, Major Telyatnikov, Leonid Petrovich was awarded the rank of Hero of Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and “Gold Star” medal (№ 11549). He continued service in the USSR Ministry of the Interior troops, and after the break up of Soviet Union he served in interior troops of the Ukraine. From 1998. Major General Telyatnikov headed the Voluntary fire service of Kiev and was the founder of Kiev children's movement “Young fireman”. Re: HSU Fireman
Further info is on:
Leonid Telyatnikov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia He died of cancer. In his actions at Chernobyl he is believed to have received 4 grays of radiation. To put his in context: A whole-body exposure to 5 or more gray of high-energy radiation at one time usually leads to death within 14 days. Since 1 gray is such a large amount of radiation, medical use of radiation is typically measured in milligrays (mGy). In the end he was probably lucky to live as long as he did! Simon |
