Re: Lt Col/Director of Railroad Troops
Great picture. I notice he has the "engineer" type buttons instead of H&S. Cool. Very well decorated, too.

Re: Lt Col/Director of Railroad Troops
Okay, now this is a point that I find confusing, and perhaps someone can enlighten or correct me.
It is my understanding from my research that the officer in the photo is not a member of the Railway Troops of the Red Army. The dark kitel tunic (which is presumably piped in green), the shoulder boards, the railway emblem buttons, and the shoulder board devices, all would indicate to me that this man is an officer, not of the railway troops, but of the Soviet Railway System itself, within the Ministry of Transportation, circa late 1940's to early 1950's. He obviously had World War II service, but I think what we see is a professional railway engineer, who served in WW II in some capacity, maybe with the Red Army, but maybe also with the Railway system proper, which was heavily involved in the war effort. I would be interested in learning more on this point! |

Re: Cloth Airborne Insignia
epaulets are artillery. This officer had an interesting career. Perhaps injured and grounded from airborne duties?
