2357 was border guards unit 10-й Хичаурский пограничный отряд Краснознаменного Закавказского пограничного округа. Some pictures from 1953 movie.

Unit number 40213 is 338-й Радиотехнический полк, Ростов-на-Дону, so it’s no surprise there. Please post reverse of photograph with Naval Political school stamp on it. And enlarge fragment with academy badge of lt.colonel-engeneer Svetlakov, official personel file photo from 1955.

Re: A cavalry man from 1954

Is there anywhere where all the Post Numbers and corresponding Units can be found? The uniforms in the film seem to be well replicated. Great eye!

I was thinking about BGs, but I didn't know they were under the MVD at that time.

I would also be glad to kniow where to find a list of units with their numbers.

Border guard’s troops were in NKVD (on March 13 1946 renamed to MVD) since 1934. On October 17 1949 Border guard’s troops were transferred to MGB. Just 9 days after Stalin’s death on March 14 1953 they were transferred back to MVD. On April 2 1957 Border guard’s troops were transferred to KGB were they remained until Soviet Union collapsed.

You can use these and of course you need to be fluent in Russian. But keep in mind this is only for Red Army and only through June of 1945.

NKVD/MGB/MVD it’s whole different story and I don’t know any sources on the Web.

Re: A cavalry man from 1954

I really don't know why I thought that BG were under NKGB command since the seccond time it was formed.
Many thanks for the clarification.
Even more thanks for the links. Can't call myself fluent at Russian, but I have no greater problems understanding written texts. Shame it doesn't cover post-1945 units, but still a grat resource.

Strangely enough for few years until Stalin’s death entire militia was in MGB, not in MVD as most people would think.

Re: Tempora mutantur et nos mutamur in illis... and so do our uniforms!

Unfortunately, Svetlakov's photograph is just too blurry and it's impossible to see any more detail of the badge. I have looked through his memoires, but didn't find any clue of what academy he has graduated from. Only information about 1955 is that he was appointed Head of the Automobile Service of the Interior Troops in Germany at that time.
Anyway, here is the stamp from Milevichius's Photo and a reverse of Svetlakov's Photograph.
